Would love your help deciding and hear opinions.. Medium or big!!

^This. The Tundra with its 4.30 gearing may the be the main exception, but otherwise I agree that most 1/2 tons are geared for fuel efficiency these days. Doesn't mean they can't be used for mild towing and hauling, but they're certainly not geared towards work the same way 3/4 tons are. The...

Would love your help deciding and hear opinions.. Medium or big!!

Well it's efficiency may not offer a drastic improvement over 3/4 ton gasoline engines, but it still offers an improvement (despite what some owners like to claim). If you don't like the 3.5l ecoboost, there are other options (smaller displacement v8's) which still offer somewhat better mpg's...

Would love your help deciding and hear opinions.. Medium or big!!

If you're putting gas mileage at #3 on your list of priorities, then I wouldn't even consider a gasoline 3/4 ton. I'd look at a 3.5l v6 ecoboost F-150 or GM Silverado with the smaller v8. The 4.6l v8 Tundra also provides decent mpg's. On average, you're looking at 1.5k lbs of payload, maybe a...

    Cross country trip rifle?

Well your post is a good example of why these types of threads get derailed; it's full of misinformation: A) It's ignorant on your part to suggest that you shouldn't visit certain states simply because of gun laws. A lot of states, to include NY, offer some very spectacular sights and places...

    2019 Ford Ranger Taking Orders

Evidently it's a big deal, legally-speaking, to go over GVWR or even go beyond a certain tire size for vehicles in Australia. So in order to legally gain more payload, people have to buy upgraded GVM kits. For as much as people drool over the Aussie 4x4 market, it does sound like there are...

Back in the Tundra Game - Hank's Build

Awesome Tundra! What is wheel and tire size? Disregard, I found the answer in your initial post. How does the stock 4.30 gearing handle 34's? And is that Bilstein suspension the same as what's on the old TRD Pro?

Adventure ("Overland") Vehicles and Payload Capacity

I'm glad to see someone putting so much consideration into weight and payload for their build planning....a lot of people don't seem to give a care about exceeding GVWR and just throw whatever they want onto their vehicles. Your personal gear estimate seems accurate. Your truck gear estimate...

    Cross country trip rifle?

Well this is actually why I'm getting so fed up with @DieselRanger's comments: because they're very misleading about what NY does and does not permit in terms of firearm possession. Not to say that the laws aren't bad here, but people like him and others at the USCCA are putting out bad gouge...

    Cross country trip rifle?

USCCA's interpretations: There is no 7 round magazine limit. A circuit of the Supreme Court overturned it. No one, to my knowledge (or yours it would seem) has actually been charged and convicted for carrying more than 7, but less than 11, rounds in their magazine. If you would like to claim...

    Cross country trip rifle?

Actually that article said very explicitly that DA's are NOT choosing to prosecute: It also said that the NYS Police are NOT charging anyone under that part of the SAFE Act: To date, I'm not aware of anyone who has been charged and convicted for having more than 7 rounds loaded in their...

    Clutch’s deep thoughts thread...

The Colorado's boxed frame, and inherently higher payload and towing, certainly has its appeal. I'm just not so sure about some of the chassis and driveline components attached to the frame. The Tacoma's components do look a bit beefier by comparison, but maybe I'm being too biased. The...

    Cross country trip rifle?

The 7 round limit was ruled UNCONSTITUTIONAL by a Supreme Court judge. There was no portion of the law that was amended (except for a bit relating to LE owning certain types of semi-auto's). The SAFE Act website is written and updated by the executive branch (likely the governor's office)...

    Clutch’s deep thoughts thread...

I certainly understand the frustration of some longterm Toyota fans. The Tacoma, despite looking new, carries over the same basic chassis design, with some mild improvements here and there. The engine just isn't that torquey, plain and simple. The earlier 4.0l v6 certainly wasn't vastly...

    Clutch’s deep thoughts thread...

If I were dealing with your driving scenario's, I'd choose the Tacoma over the Tundra. There might be other midsized pickups that you want to consider, but in terms of midsized vs 1/2 ton, I think the former makes a lot more sense from a cost and usage perspective. FWIW, the 6-speed manual...

    Clutch’s deep thoughts thread...

I think it really depends on the frequency of type of towing. For occasional towing of 5k-6klbs on mostly flat terrain, the Tacoma should be sufficient but certainly not great. That new 3.5l v6 just doesn't have a whole lot of low-end torque. It will definitely pull hard in the upper RPM's...

GrandiOdyssey: Circumnavigating the Globe in a '19 Tacoma Build Thread

With a pickup, the need for larger replacement or auxiliary fuel tanks is greatly reduced. Just throw jerry cans in the bed and you're golden. For the trip you're looking at I'd take OME (the old nitrocharger shocks or the new BP-51's) over Icon's and King's any day of the week. Yes the later...

    2019 Ford Ranger Taking Orders

All of the above may be true, though I don't if we can read too much into the different tow/payload ratings for overseas Rangers and Hilux's...The methods/standards for rating a US-spec pickup's tow/payload capabilities are not the same as what's used overseas.

    2019 Ford Ranger Taking Orders

I still want to see an in depth comparison between the US-spec Ranger and the global version. Everyone keeps saying that they're "basically" the same chassis/platform, but I wonder if Ford made some changes to the NA-version to make it lighter and more efficient.

    Cross country trip rifle?

NY's 7 round limit was ruled unconstitutional by a 2nd Circuit Court judge: SAFE Act ruling So that bit is wrong. Except that regulation is misleading. That executive rule (not the same thing as a law) is written and enforced by NY's State Office of Parks and Recreation. They have...
