Unimog Camper - construction never stops :)

We had the diesel stove, which was great, apart form taking a long time to heat up and cool down. Then it stopped working - I diagnosed the problem one of circuit boards, which would cost $900 + shipping to replace, with no guarantee. Just to look at it was a $500 fee, and local tech shop...

Unimog Camper - construction never stops :)

We have decided to do shorter trips in the truck, until we can get away for a longer break later this year hopefully. Here is our new video from one of these short trips, hopefully one every month from now on.

Toolbox / fuel tank ground clearance?

Fully loaded, we are 600mm at the lowest point ( which is the chassis itself) and we have a 3250mm wheelbase. We have never bottomed out, closest we came was driving over a fallen tree, and hit the step which I had to bend down a bit afterwards. As you can see below, the step is about 150mm...

MB 1120 Coming to America! Purchase, Build and Now Travel!

I never bothered with bearings on mine, just used normal zinc plated bolts with a tight fit - steel to steel and some occasional grease or spray oil. So far, I have never had to replace even one of the bolts, and give it a spray with some Ballistol every couple of months, especially when we...

MB 1120 Coming to America! Purchase, Build and Now Travel!

The problem I can see is that the lever arm for the ladder trying to fold it in (assuming the lower step is on the bottom) is so much more than the lever arm length available to push the ladder out. It looks like at least 10:1 - so if I stood on it, my 82kg would exert 820kg onto the lever...

When I was designing my steps, I used cardboard, as it is a lot easier to work with for the first concepts. All you need to do is prove the concept works, if you are getting someone else to make it, then the plywood would be great, as you could get it fully functional with all the right...

Unimog Camper - construction never stops :)

We had a long weekend testing the new cook top - and it works great. Our battery monitor can display the charging/discharging cycles. This is a typical meal, lamb chops frying in one pan, then a bean mix, and 750ml of water in the other plate at the same time, and this is the power...

He posts on Facebook now and again, seen some photos of him driving his truck around on the beach.

Unimog Camper - construction never stops :)

Our diesel stove decided not to work on our last trip. From what I can tell, the main control board is not working. The parts along are over $1000 AUD, and that's if it is just the main board. We decided to switch over to an induction cooktop. It was a bit more complicated than just...

    MB truck electric questions

Not sure if this will help, but on the Unimog, the Hazard switch supplies the power to the turn signal, so if there is anything wrong with one of the contacts on the switch, you lose your indicators. YOu can take the switch apart and clean the contacts, but what out for the tiny springs and...

Clicked on my first post, and both my wife and I had a laugh about the comment - "....what it will look like in a few month time" little did I know it would be five more years

    Lowly the Lorry. . .

Looks like an ideal setup, something I could have used 10 years ago when I was doing my truck.

Looks like a pretty solid door. Fibreglass and plywood is a great combination, easy to work and very strong. We had to make our door out of steel and aluminium, as it had to be "rated" with an ant-burst two stage lock like a car door because it being a passenger compartment. Getting a dust...

My first car had that, and I thought it was great as well. Now I have both the indicator stick option and the foot switch, and I find the foot switch a lot easier. This is the Mk1 version, but the switch is in the right position for me to tap it with my ankle easily

Time for another update, the 1000W subwoofer is out, and I've made a new slimline storage pod for the dash. Apart from the obligatory pair of cup holders, it also house the F/R + H/L gear change switches, and the iPad mount as well. The subwoofer and amplifiers weighed around 40kg, so...

I've got two complete refurbished portal boxes all packed and waiting to be shipped. If we were going overseas, I'd probably carry one with us. I also have a complete new set of portal gears, seals etc, but we don't have the carry capacity you have Charlie, so we can't carry as much.
