Hike to La Plata Peak, Colorado 7.2.22

Made a quick trip (if you can call it that) on Saturday to go hike La Plata Peak here in Colorado after changing plans due to weather on Friday. 5th highest peak in the state at around 14,344 ft, 9.25 mile round trip from the trailhead. Started at around 525 am and got back to my truck around...

Return to Hermit Pass, Colorado 6.11.22

Reason for the short day. Just outside of the tree line and right before the picture of my truck next to a snow bank on the road. I had came across a father and son coming back down the mountain in their Volkswagon CUV and stopped to talk with them (noticed that they looked like to be on...

Almost 10 years ago to the date (minus 5 days) took a trip up to Hermit Pass, Colorado for some hiking and decided earlier in the week to head back after finding my old trip report while doing some searching (https://expeditionportal.com/forum/threads/hermit-pass-colorado-6-16-12.79760/ ) for...

Pecos National Historic Park and Galisteo Basin Preserve

Just outside of the main park you can take a short walk around the Glorieta Pass Battlefield trail and catch up on some Civil War history in the area (you have to get a gate passcode from the main park visitor center). There is not much to see in the way of scenic views on this trail since your...

Pecos National Historic Park and Galisteo Basin Preserve

Every time I've traveled home to Arizona or when I've past though New Mexico going to other parts I've past the turn off for Pecos National Historic Park but never stopped to check it out (I actually had planned to visit back in February as part of another trip but it didn't pan out on that...

It's kind of fun going to some of these places since you normally don't hear about them and it just adds to the trips.

After tooling around the park and the visitor center I was off to the Quebradas National Back Country Byway in central New Mexico before heading home (trip was to be long but due to a personnel issue I had to call the trip a day short).

One of the trails in the area that you can hike and bike and from what could tell they don’t get much use. White Sands National Park on the 2nd day, a park which I don’t ever recall visiting on family vacations growing up. Recent snow storms added to the whiteness of the park. I think it...

Overlook – there’s a campground to left down in the valley with one camper (Cave campground, there is cave in area you can explore which I didn’t do on this trip). From the East Well Trail Gypusm Spring Canyon – nothing left of the lake besides the structures. I was tempted to...

The building on the left was the Occupational Therapy Building and the building on the right is the Power Plant (building in 1935, was the 2nd one building on site and one of the oldest in New Mexico). Down the road from the fort is the location of the Fort Stanton Cemetery.
