2003 Ford Excursion 7.3 Turbo Diesel

Asking price: $20,000 O.B.O. Location Northern Virginia (USA) I bought this truck a few years ago with the intention of making it a full time overland expedition vehicle. I have done a few trips with this and the truck has performed well for my needs. The biggest damper in the plan was that my...

M116A3 - First Trailer for Overland Travels!

Slight change of plans for the tow rig. After unsuccessfully trying to convince my wife that she could learn to comfortably drive the Excursion while on trips, I have decided to sell it. It will be replaced by a 2001 Lexus LX450 that I made a deal on this morning. This also means that some of...

    100 Series Purchase advise

Thank you. I went back earlier today and knocked on all those metal parts yet again. None of the pieces seemed to be excessively corroded to the point of being crusty and crumpling. Taking into account, I made a much lower 35% lower than asking price to the seller after showing him all the work...

    100 Series Purchase advise

Hello folks I've recently started searching for a 100 series to build out as an overlander. Found a 2001 LX470 in reasonably good shape with 190K miles. Visually it checked out fine on the outside. All functions are good. TB replaced by dealership, but seller does not remember mileage. But, on...

Cool Jeeps You Can't Have - Mahindra of India

India and Pakistan have had border disputes since partition in 1947. Same goes for the India - China border as well. Hence the heavy artillery presence in pretty much every place along these borders.

Cool Jeeps You Can't Have - Mahindra of India

@jscherb Thank you very much for this awesome thread on these amazing vehicles from India. Thank you for taking me back to my younger days when we would tinker around with these vehicles in my uncle's shop during summer breaks. The Mahindra trucks and the Hindustan Ambassador are the longest...

M116A3 - First Trailer for Overland Travels!

Just documenting some of the measurements. The trailer sits about 3" taller when on the HMMWV wheels. I am running 33" tires for now to go with the 34" tires on the Excursion.

M116A3 - First Trailer for Overland Travels!

Thanks! I like to take pictures of the build process. Helpful to me, and others. Most importantly, I use it as a document to go back to at a later time if I am troubleshooting or wanting to redesign. More pictures are here. I have not looked too deep into the current mounting and reasoning for...

M116A3 - First Trailer for Overland Travels!

As it stands now, the trailer still sits quite a bit higher in the back essentially having a nose down kind of profile when hooked up with a 4" riser hitch. Has anybody switched the axles to go 'over' the leaf springs instead of under them as they come from the factory? I see that there are...

M116A3 - First Trailer for Overland Travels!

Spent some time this morning working on the trailer. Accomplished the following today - Switched out the HMMWV wheels to Superduty wheels to match the Excursion - Converted the lights to run on 12V. Cut off the 12 pin plug and installed a 7 pin trailer plug.

M116A3 - First Trailer for Overland Travels!

I will be using space adapters to convert from 8x6.5 to 8x170 bolt pattern. Though I’m not a big fan of spacers this will have to do until I have the time and money to do an axle swap.

M116A3 - First Trailer for Overland Travels!

@Verkstad @old_CWO Thank you for the pointers. For now, my plan is to build the trailer in this order 1. Lower the trailer to level it with the tow rig 2. Build the box structure etc. and get it ready 3. Make multiple test runs and improve the structure as needed. 4. Swap out to Dexter...

The design as we go M-101A1 Trailer build

Thank you much for this. I was hoping to avoid a steel structure as well and use a heavier aluminum angle and MDO as well. The M116A3 weighs ~1000 lbs. I plan to swap the HMMWV wheels for super duty wheels for weight reduction. For now, I am keeping the surge brakes and the military axle due to...

M116A3 - First Trailer for Overland Travels!

UPDATE: Late last night, I made a deal on the M116A3 with my friend. For now, he has graciously agreed to keep the trailer on his yard for a some more time until the weather gets better and I can safely bring the trailer home to park in my backyard without damaging it. He is also gathering all...

The design as we go M-101A1 Trailer build

@protohyp First off, awesome build. I really like the pumpkin color :) What is the material used in this build? I see aluminum angle bar stock used for all edges. What did you coat the box with? PS: This is yet another of the build that I would like to take some inspiration from for my...

M116A3 - First Trailer for Overland Travels!

I was planning to register in Maine, instead of my home state of VA. Well, both states require trailer brakes when over 3000 lbs GVWR. The trailer is rated for 3150 lbs. So, Yeah, the brakes will stay. I have never pulled a trailer without brakes before. Surge/Electrical - I'll have to decide...

M116A3 - First Trailer for Overland Travels!

Yes. I liked the fact that the trailer is just as wide as the truck. I do have the elephant ear trailer mirrors - they are amazing IMHO. Are you saying that I do not need any trailer brakes? And the Excursion brakes are sufficient? Actually, I like the pintle hook setup since it will prevent...

M116A3 - First Trailer for Overland Travels!

I have never seen one of these military trailers in person. So, I reached out to a few different sellers and took a 200+ mile round trip to see a few M1101, 02, and M116A3 trailers today up in rural PA and MD. OMG, the M1101 & 2 were just enormous. They just look HEAVY sitting there in front of...
