From 1-10, how bad is this going to be?

Yes, a DIY tray for the flatbed is a consideration. I missed out on a 6’ flippac locally when I started this search. My thought on that one was to build a small tray for the flatbed that the flippac could mount to. I still think that would be a decent option with any of the truck bed/topper...

Cool ranger! And yeah... I think that’s great advice. If I put something on the back of the Taco, I’ll probably stick to something more like a flippac, habitat, GFC, etc. Or I’ll just give in and look for a cheap pop up trailer.

Sold. I contacted the seller within an hour or two of the sale post, but that was still too late. The search continues....

From 1-10, how bad is this going to be?

I made a few calls... Best guess from FWC is the ‘79 Hawk as it sits w/furnace, couch, But not a ton of amenities is probably around 1000-1100 pounds. Stripped down completely it might be 500-ish, a minimal build and a little gear comes back up around 700-800. Called my mechanic and local off...

From 1-10, how bad is this going to be?

Yeah, in my magical dreamland it could be a pretty rad build with a little work. The flatbed is a bit lighter than the stock bed, so I save some there. But it also site roughly 3” higher than the bottom of the stock bed, so all weight of the camper will be that much higher. I need to find the...

From 1-10, how bad of an idea can this be?

Yeah, this is exactly my concern. The wishful part of me is hoping the camper isn’t actually that heavy (I need to call FWC or do some research to find the weight), and I can possibly lighten it more doing the renovation. The base is about 6’4” which isn’t that much longer than a new FWC swift-...

From 1-10, how bad of an idea can this be?

I’ve been posting around here a little bit lately, trying to find a camping solution for my wife, myself, our baby. We have a 1st gen, double cab Tacoma TRD. The tiny 5’ bed was replaced with a flatbed by the previous owner. I recently came across a 1979 FWC Hawk. How bad of an idea can it be to...

Camper suggestions for a baby and a DC Taco

Thanks for all the feedback so far! The majority of our trips are likely to be one or two night campouts close to home. We have seemingly endless public land right from the edge of our neighborhood. Low hassle and the ability to get up some of the rougher forest service roads that surround us...

Flatbed DC Taco and a baby... Camper Suggestions?

@al_burpe That‘s great advice and I have (and continue) to consider the same thing. However, I also have this idea that maybe we’ll be able to take advantage of some quick one or two night camp trips, even leaving right after work and possibly coming back right before. We live in a small...

Flatbed DC Taco and a baby... Camper Suggestions?

This past winter my wife and I acquired a 1st gen flatbed double cab Tacoma and more importantly a super rad baby boy, now 7 months old. I’m trying to figure out our best options for family camping and would love some advice. Summers are super busy for us so ease of use, low hassle, and the...

ISO- better seats for my ‘02 DC Tacoma

I recently got an ‘02 DC Tacoma that I really like, but the seats are incredibly uncomfortable on longer drives. Much worse than the seats in my ‘97 4Runner (even with 280k miles). I would love to find some 3rd gen 4Runner seats or anything else that I can swap in. Any suggestions?

TRADE: 7.3 Excursion 4x4, Vegetable Oil Conversion

Sounds good, thanks! Also, just to clarify- This excursion has two tanks and both can run on diesel just fine. The original, 45 gallon, stock location tank is heated and can run vegetable oil, diesel, or any combination of the two. There is also an auxiliary, 20 gallon, tank mounted between...

TRADE: 7.3 Excursion 4x4, Vegetable Oil Conversion

I just had a baby (yes, he’s super cute) and I am again motivated to downsize/simplify. I’d love to trade for a Subaru or Toyota, preferably with a manual transmission, preferably kinda cool (whatever that means?), must fit a rear-facing child seat. The Excursion is still running great and just...
