Trail Pig 2018 PW Build

I'm curious, that locker bypass..what would you use that for? I just ordered my 2022 PW, so I'm learning about the platform. And you're local to me! Nice truck!

On the 4th gens you can’t use the lockers unless you are in low range. The bypass gives you a 2wd lock as well as the ability to use the lockers in four high.

The nanny kill disabled all of the abs and traction controls so you’re getting full power to the wheels. Burnouts for days!

Haven’t done anything major to the PW.. but have been getting it ready for a few upcoming trips.

I had ordered all the pieces of extruded aluminum and plate aluminum to build a low profile roof rack on my ARE shell on my 2014. The idea was increase cargo capacity and have a spot for the awnings, treds, etc.

Fast forward to this week. I very carefully drilled holes in the side plates (3”x5’ aluminum), painstakingly painted it in a bed liner, and assembled the sides with six pieces of extruded bars (think prinsu). Then I went to put it on the tracks of the rsi shell… and surprise! They taper from front to back.. so having the plate edges wouldn’t work.

So I don’t net back to the drawing board and used 8020 all the way around..

This is the final product.

The goals were achieved. Plenty of space for mounting cargo or fancy adventure accessories.. easy mounting of the OVS awning and driver side awning.. and fairly low profile.

Long way to say measure more than you think you need. Haha

Next step was playing Tetris on the Bedslide with the 37” spare (still working on hinges and latches for a swing out)

Remember, whatever side you think your fridge should be mounted on.. is wrong. After switching to the Smartcap, the fridge would fit under my driver side bin, which allowed chuck box to sit on passenger side and be a little more accessible

Simple enough, but had to move the cargo track and will have to move the threaded outlet to the driver side. Just obnoxious.

This is the space I’ll have to work with.. could be better could be worse.

While messing with this, I also used some cheap
Brackets to stiffen up the bins on the Bedslide. Huge improvement from some scrap laying around the shop.

I promise there will be some actual adventure posts soon. Maybe.

Build is looking awesome. These RSI caps keep making me mad I got the ramboxes. Can I get what brand that chuck box is? Thanks and great truck.

Thank you

The chuck box is from yoke outdoors. I think I posted it under camp chef as well.

Prior to finding them, we had a box we had made out of plywood. It held everything, but was HEAVY. That’s the biggest pro of this.. that and the lid coming off to be a wash pan. I do wish it were a little more modular but then I would probably just carry more stuff I don’t use..

Getting ready for two short trips in a row.. since the truck is about where I want it with the shell and slide, it was time to play what I call adult Tetris… trying to fit all the things I *think* I need into the limited space.

I try to keep the cab free of gear for the last minute stuff.

We could definitely cut space with a smaller
Tent, backing sleep gear, and back packing drive but then why have the wagon??

Nice and clean with extra room for the saw should I choose to bring it.

The storage issue is the exact reason I'm leery of those bedslides. Sure they are convenient but you lose a lot of width to them. Seems like you have a good amount of gear though so hopefully that is more or less max storage needs.

Agreed.. I was able to use the space at the front of the bed in front of the rear wheel on the drivers side For the house battery. Eventually I’ll put the air compressor on the passenger side. Those spade are
Convenient for things like that. To the rear of the wheel wells last minute things tend to get thrown.

Once I get motivated to build the swing out, I’ll gain a lot of room by getting the 37” spare out of the back. Space hog.

Took the wagon out for a four day trip. The plan was to go the “back way” to Crown King, AZ. The route takes FS “roads” (definitely more geared to jeeps and UTVs) from Lake pleasant to Crown King. The fall colors looked nice behind the drab wagon.

Everything was going well until around Wasson Peak when we found a Jeep Gladiator going over a small obstacle, as we pulled up it cleared but not without some terrible noises.

Long story short, the obstacle claimed the Wagon. I high centered between the two skids and we were stuck. After a few hours of jacking each corner up and stacking rocks, we freed her. Since it was dark we backed down the trail (through an obstacle) and back to a nice wide spot near the junction of FR192. Pitched a quick camp and Had a nice dinner of meat and cheese and a well-deserved beverage.

Next day we decided to reevaluate and take the back way towards Prescott via Minnihaha and Senator Highway. After the long night before, we decided to find a spot to camp early and relax.

The next morning had a good breakfast, broke camp, and headed towards Prescott.

The road up Senator highway was scenic, and easy. Had to dodge a couple dirt bikes and SxSs though. Grabbed a quick pic at the Palace Station.

Set up camp off Walker Road in the dispersed sites near Lynx Lake. Pretty site, but dirt bikes, quads and close campers were loud and dusty. There’s a reason we try and get way off the beaten path.

Made a good pasta dinner and relaxed, we were planning on getting back on the road home early the following morning.

All in all, a good trip. Sad to crunch a little rocker panel getting high centered but it happens.. made the wagon mine I guess. Sliders are moving up the priority chain. Whoops!

Hopefully headed out on a less technical trip this weekend.

Nice! looks like a fun trip!! That’s pretty great thought on the chuck box. Haven’t used one since Scouts, but makes a ton of sense! (Starts reevaluating my own bed build-out...)

I did a similar route in our PW in sept coming from Phoenix to Crown King via the “Cleator Yacht Club” (awesome little spot) before catching the Senator Hwy north to Prescott. Camped just south of Hooper Saddle, then hit a mildly washed out part fairly early on the next morning... some folks in a JK had warned me about it, but with good tire placement, no biggie. That area is phenomenal though!!! All the dust and got some AZ pinstripe got too. ?

Back to work after a weekend in the pines.

This trip was more about getting out and relaxing than wheeling, and mission successful.

Camped in rim country on “good enough ridge”. The site was definitely good enough.

Sunrise over camp

The first morning we went out on foot exploring in Bear Canyon. Awesome scenery and if you have the equipment, has some minor canyoneering attractions.

Dinner after our hike was walking tacos.. which are not to be confused with frito pies

The second day we relaxed around camp after a sweet potato scramble

The rest of the day was cutting and splitting wood, then relaxing.

A cool label got me to purchase a “kentucky bourbon” that is banana flavored. Whoops..

Dinner was a Dutch oven pizza. As much as I hate lugging the damn thing around.. it turns out a mean pizza.

Worth it.

A good weekend in the pines, running the saw some, and exploring.

Did some minor changes to the packing, ditched the big tote for compression sacks for bedding, and got a smaller box for our “provisions box”. Bed is starting to gain more space, slowly.

Next trip planned in December.

Compression sacks reign king for me when I motorcycle camp or when on river trips. I can see the benefit in the truck as well, especially if you're trying to make for more room to spread out at night.

Spent the last six days out and about with family. The original plan was find some snow and wheel and camp, but the local forest shut down the roads. So not wanting to stay in campgrounds, we sought warmer (definitely still not warm) weather..

IMG_6244.jpg

Second and third night were spent along the verde river. Found a cool dwelling nearby. Still well below freezing at night, as the frozen faucet shows.

IMG_6268.jpg

IMG_6260.jpg

Then we crept south more hoping for warmer climates. IMG_6285.jpg

Finally we ended up in the junipers for the last two nights.

IMG_6288.jpg

All in all a great trip. A good reminder that as warm as carhartts are, they refuse to pack well. Still
Hunting down the sway issue on the PW but the culprit seems to be weight up high.
