A discussion about Rover pricing....are values really gone this high?

So I am going to have to get rid of 2 of my Discovery 1’s and I was looking at prices around me.
My jaw dropped when I saw what this person was asking for their Classic. I have been kind out of it for the last couple years due to a bad injury and haven’t been paying too close of attention. I know there is a bit of a price hike right now because of vehicle shortages. BUT have the values really increased that much?

Example:
It’s super clean, but DAMN!

Aside from the price of this vehicle, what do you think a rough price would be for a solid roof(no moonroofs) 97’ Disco 1 with a TON of cool gear. FZJ 80 axles with ARB Lockers front and rear, 300 TDI, and a custom R380 with a taller 5th gear for better fuel mileage (entire drivetrain/axles were rebuilt and only have 30k miles on them).

Also, what about a solid roof 95’ Disco 1 that is pretty clean (except for the paint, a dent, and a curling dash pad) has 115k miles, and was owned by a little old lady. What you see is what you get with this one. Hasn’t been modified or or messed with at all.

Don’t look at Aussie defender and RRC pricing. Used 2015-2017 Defenders with 50,000km are going for $20-30k more than they were new.

In 2016 I was very close to buying a 90, silver with “Black pack”, then I was offered a job in the US and didn’t buy it. If I just had and stuck it in a mates shed, hahah.

I skipped over your entire post to simply reply, “Yes.” Especially due to COVID.

- 80s/90s vehicles and analog driving experiences are the thing now. So.. RRC, D1/2, P38 prices are UP.
- SUVs and “overland” stuff is also way up, even more so due to COVID.
- Not so old capable SUVs are in SUPER high demand, so LR3/4 prices are going up. Which makes no sense to us LR people. We buy 10 year old models bc they depreciate like rocks and no one wants to buy them. That’s gone now.

I seriously doubt that I could ever sell my '07 LR3 for what I have invested in it but it is fine with me as I probably won't be thinking of selling it anytime soon. But based on what you say I am glad I am not looking for one now.

People aren't buying new that drives used prices up. I've been looking for an LR4 the last few months. First problem is they are sold quick..Second is prices have increased enormously..enough to make me consider a new Disco..

I sold my 97 Defender ST for an absurd amount of money, almost 6 figures. Buyer flew out from the East coast to look it over. It essentially sold on Hemmings in 3 days. I have had 9 of the Defender's and Series vehicles over the years. My first emptying my wallet to the tune of $800. Oh my, almost broke me there. I do not think I would pay what folks are paying for the vehicles now, having had several over the years. They just are not that special. On a bright note, I can get whatever model of the new Defender I want, seeing they are cheaper than my nearly ¼ of a century old one went for. I could get the latest Calperian or whatever silly name they attached to it for an equally absurd amount and you can only get it in Grey, looks like black to me, but they insist it is grey. Black or lets throw them a bone, grey (at least this shade) is perhaps the dumbest color you could choose for a vehicle you plan to take into the wilderness. Every spec of pollen, every scratch shows. Then unless your explorations are going to be in the arctic, there is the "lets see how hot we can get the cabin" thing going from that pesky sunlight stuff. What, did everybody fail physics 1? Oh, and you can get the roof and the hood painted black for even more money! Of course I do know what silly pricing is, I have airplanes too. Gosh, will I ever learn. I think I need a boat now.

Near perfect anything is worth well pver $20K. Low mileage, one owner, full records adds $5K to that.
The listing you show at $25K looks pretty vlean but not special. $25K is a fait asking price.

The green? Disco you show hardly qualifies as clean, is there a body panel without a dent?
Mods and lifts seldom add value unless they are brand new and unused.
New tires, new shocks, full maintenance records plus all the overlanding dodads,
$8K might be a hard sell... and only if you find someone who wants the racks, awnings, snorkel.

The little old lady box stock daily driver is hardly pristine. One can see rust peeking thru the paint all over it.
I'd say shes lucky if she gets $5K.

The trucks that are getting $30K and up are mostly cleaner than when they were new.

This one sold last week for $33,500.

The prices of everything is through the roof right now. I bought a P38 18 months ago that is now worth 2x what I paid for it.

Top result for a Range Rover, very clean with an LS3 and 6 speed automatic... $96K.

All it takes is 2 bidders not wanting to lose.
https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1988-land-rover-range-rover-24/

And then you get "Martha look at this, 96 GRAND, we have one lets sell it" !!
A lot of the asking price is driven by a one off auction sale where two egos with big wallets collided.
Won't work on Craigs List. Won't work when all you have is an old used car.

Incredible how many "used cars" are on Bring a trailer right now with outrageous reserves.
A basic 4x4, 40 years old definitely a nice pretty clean maybe rust free truck gets bid to a fair $26K and is a no sale cuz the seller had a $50K reserve. I bet half the SUV, overlanding potential 4x4s at auction right now are no sales because the seller thinks he has this,

a 96 mile 40 year old F250 that sold for $96K

Better than new.

Or this, a 1500 mile from one trip down the east coast brand new and in storage for 30 years til the owner died.
The extra 1424 miles cost $43, 350 in depreciation over the one above ^^^

People are asking outrageous prices but not selling.
The few that are selling for outrageous prices are exceptional trucks, SUVs, 4x4s.

I know you are talking Rovers and I threw in a couple of Fords but they show where the market is right now.
Actually it has always been here for the exceptional sale, almost regardless of what it is.

And buyers of used vehicles have always been driven to unrealistic expectations.
There are still great used car buys out there under $20K.

Incredibly, the pandemic seems to have been great for the economy. No country is in a recession, there is money flowing everywhere stuff is selling, construction is booming, eventually there will be a bust and things like $96K F250s will be selling for $20K because they are just good used trucks. Today is the day to sell or hold and enjoy what you have. Today is not the day to buy.
