My Journey

I too have a fascination with the cliff dwellers. It began when I was probably under 8 years old. We had visited Mesa Verde, in Colorado. I went back 20 years or so ago to share it with my ex and step-son. This summer, I will take my 16 yo daughter to see it. If I remember correctly, it is all "hands off" but I want her to see how people made life from what was available. Arrowhead (artifact) hunting has also intrigued me. My grandfather and uncle would often find arrowheads in the fields they'd plowed, on the plains of OK. The dating of these artifacts, by experts, always confuses me as they often say "paleo" and before. I grew up envisioning 17-1800's cowboy & Indians.

This channel shows some cliff dwellings.

Greg.....this sighting was also close to the coast.....

tgil.....Mesa Verde is a fantastic place.....

Chet.....thanks.....

An update on Yukon.....since our appointment nearly a week ago her health has continued to decilne and it has been rapid. Last night was bad.....tonight was worse. I've increased her pain medication tonight by 50 %. It's difficult to watch and I'm just not sure how much longer I can let this go on. She is much too special to me to let her suffer.....I'm hopeful that the increased medication will be the answer.....

Our next stop was along the interstate as we were driving east.....it was one of those brief stops just to simply fill Yukons pain killer prescription. During our wait we decided to treat Yukon to breakfast at McDonald's......

What better way to start your day.....

Three egg & sausage sandwiches.....

From here we continued east on the interstate and the next planned destination was the Petrified Forest National Park.....

20200202_114100_copy_1600x778.jpg

I had no idea why I came to this park.....I had no desire to see petrified wood and all I can come up with is that I'd never been here before.....but maybe it was even a bit more simplistic than that.....maybe it was just to say that I had been here too.....

20200202_115229_copy_1600x778.jpg

As it turned out the road through the park was closed due to bridge construction.....in addition to this a massive storm with snow and winds gusting to 75 mph were in the forecast.....

These days my mind seems only to be focused on Yukon and her well being. I began to conjure up ideas of being stranded in the high desert and Yukon having some sort of total failure.....

20200202_115727_copy_778x1600.jpg

My stress level had gone into high gear and it was here that I decided that I needed to drive south and get her back to the veterinarian. We stayed barely an hour, I tucked my tail between my legs and headed south.....it was just too soon to begin our migration north.....

Jerry, I'm sorry for both of you but it sounds like you know what you're going to have to do. You have given her a great life and you will always have so many good memories to look back on. I have been where you are and each time is the worst time of my life. Good luck and reach out to the community for support if you need it.

Great pictures. Sarah is like a bulldozer when it snows. Mouth open scooping up and eating as much as she can. From eating snow, diving for rocks, or rolling over and posing for Holly Pictures, I never get bored.

I probably shouldn’t clog up Jerry’s travel thread here but so many of us are dog owners and lovers. Would Jerry or anyone object if we posted just one of our own favorite dog photos. I already have and Jerry was good with it so here’s a shot of my best friend Kenda.

Riversdad, Arjan, Ace, tgil, Sticky9, JD, danfromsyr, & Ghostdancer.....thanks for making this blog a million times better ! Nobody wants selfies.....we want dog pics.....

Ghostdancer.....what a beautiful dog she was.....

After our short vist to the national park we are driving southeast on Route 180.....and once again planning on yet another return to Tucson, Arizona. My mind was focused on the impending foul weather so stops were infrequent on this day.....I wanted nothing to do with that storm but I did have to pull over to photograph this cool little church.....

We would eventually take a short cut and merge onto Route 180A and when I saw this highway sign it kept me on the move.....

In Concho, Arizona we picked up Highway 60 and now we were driving southwest.....almost seemed like we were driving half of a huge loop.....

In Showlow, Arizona the highway turned south and now we were finally headed towards Tucson, Arizona. We entered the Fort Apache Reservation and just prior to exiting the reservation we just had to stop to take in this amazing little canyon.....

At this point in our travels we were far enough south that the impending storm would have no effect on our weather. We found ourselves a nice little spot along the highway as we were now back into the national forest lands.....

The following morning I was on the phone with the veterinarian.....the one I spoke of previously.....the one that I said was a good man. His office told me to have Yukon back in that afternoon.....we were back on the road again.....

20200208_111957_copy_1600x778.jpg

We only made a few stops that day and by far my favorite stop was the one along the Gila River.....

20200203_110523_copy_2469x1200.jpg

We had an appointment to make so unfortunately this was yet one more brief stop.....

Yukon of course was fine wading in the cool waters.....

And Tanner as well.....

20200203_105236_copy_2469x1200.jpg

But Tanner.....well, once he discovered this tree along the rivers edge.....well, it was difficult to get him down.....

20200203_105734_copy_1200x2469.jpg

And once he was down.....well, he was right back up.....

20200203_105625_copy_1200x2469.jpg

A little travel.....a lot of dogs.....
