I bumped into a Belgian couple with a very neat looking self-build Unimog camper with a cabin very similar to that of the innovan, albeit a bit larger. That photo of the innovan just looks very rear heavy though!!
Unicat lifting roof...
Thanks, I can see the issue with the truck bed side, however, in my opinion, the unicat method is far from uncompromising. It certainly has the sleek look with the lifting section fitting flush with the main wall, but at the expense of this look, the insulation in the top...
That's a pretty neat vehicle. About the "small", I mean it is the smallest size for my taste :)
Any idea why they'll only have the door at the back even on a custom model?

Clearing things up...
McVick,
To be honest, it was a matter of time before those comments were removed, but I don't think they were off topic, they were informative facts which the authour felt were in the interest of potential clients.
For clarification though:
Overland campers I mean...
Thanks dzzz,
I understand people may take the view there is little need for a unimog camper in North America, but my reasons are simply:
1. Greater off road capabilities,
2. Greater load capacity
With greater load capacity, you can take more supples and one can spend more time in the wild. For...
Thanks for all the advice, sorry if I have confused anyone along the way, I clarify:
1) Ideally I would like a new Euro-spec U5000 in North America, but given the cost and hassel of a conversion, it is ruled out.
2) Importing an older model Unimog from Europe is a possibility, but it seems...
Martyn, I was under the impression vehicles over the age of 25 years (and 15 for canada) can be imported anyway, regardless of the EPA/DOT emissions jargon?
Charlie, do you have any names of any good mog places in the US, who can do the modifications and services etc..?
Cheers

True true. The infrared camera in the hood looks rather interesting. I am not sure what the rules are for locals to travel between provinces in china, for a foreigner it is just hellish!
Still, it's a great(and expensive) rig. So much for chinese communism...
Thanks,
So it seems it could be possible to bring a new unimog up to US standards, albeit costly and a bit of a faff.
I suppose the alternative is to import an older model (>25 yrs), from before 1985. Here in Europe there are lots of good value vehicles from that era at excellent prices. As...
Thanks,
But sooner or later the supply of U500s in North America will dry up and finding one will become harder. I don't know how easy it is to get one in USA or Canada atm, I'll have to check, but I don't get the impression the U500 is as 'formidable' as the U4000/5000? What are your thoughts...
Thanks for all the replies everyone, it seems we all have different views on North America.
My thoughts:
1) Unicat, too big - ER, too small. A balance between these (maybe on Unimog) would be ideal (Small unimog camper).
2) Not too many places to take such a rig in N. America? I would...
