The Duramax is actually a fairly reliable light duty diesel engine. And the modern GM 9.25" IFS system is actually just as strong as a Dana 60. They solve a lot of the IFS issues with the GMT800 and 900 platforms. As for rear axles, Ram and GM use the same AAM 11.5" axle. That said, the Ram does...
Motorcraft sells ones for the 350s that are greaseable. Had to change them out on one a little while ago.

No, look on the rpo list in the glove box. If it has posi, you will see the code G80. However, it is very possible to see all the stuff the vehicle has by using a VIN decoder like compnine.

Yeah, post edited. It will have an NP241 transfer case, probably with a 4L60E, 8.5" rear axle, 8.25" ifs, and whatever engine is in it.

Not sure on the SUVs, but some of the trucks had push-button 4x4 starting in '96.
Seeing as its a manual transfer case, you will have an NP241, which is the manual version of the NP243, which is the push-button 4x4 (not to be confused with the Np246, which is the autotrac)

"Like New" is a relative term when it comes to military equipment, especially vehicles. Those vehicles tend to get the ******t beat out of them. And as for mileage, that's only times it actually moved. Military has a tendency to let vehicles idle for extended periods of time

I think all 3/4 and 1 tons bad 4L80s in them. I would just use the Vortec. More power, better fuel economy too. And there are fixes for the fuel injection system, in the form of an updated injection assembly with electronic injectors as opposed to the stock poppet valves.

Or you could have the best of both worlds... Find a truck with an 8.1! You'll have he rugged reliability of a gasser, and the power of a diesel. Fuel economy may be just a wee bit below your desires though..

I think you should find a truck with an 8.1 :D
But seriously, it all depends on what you're after. The Duramax will have more power and better fuel economy, but are you willing to spend the extra on maintenance that diesels require?

Perdonally, i would go with a DCSB Tundra, simply because I like the versatility. I can tow one day and off-road the next. As for trim, I would get the TRD if you can afford it. The locking differential will help a ton off-road, especially when you get into trouble areas. The suspension will...
Aside from that, looks okay. Would I get one? Probably not. If I get a midsize, I wouldn't want to sacrifice the solid rear axle, or the body-on-frame setup.
