    PLB Monitoring

It depends on the state. In Colorado, the AFRCC will contact the Colorado Search and Rescue Board and the the on duty coordinator will contact the appropriate SAR Team. The mission is then assigned and the SAR Team will contact the AFRCC directly for the PLB info (i.e. estimated location, who is...

    Suture Kit?

I carry a wound (clotting sponge) kit. Generally don't want to take the chance of closing a wound and trapping something in it. Also don't want to spend the time involved in suturing and distress of no anesthetic. I know there is an acronym for this, but I can't remember it; find, assess, treat...

    What LED headlamp for SAR

I just retired my gen 1 BD Storm and got the new one. I like the "latch" ability on the new one to speed/ease the change out of batteries. I alway forget to replace the batts after the last mission and end up doing it either in the field or when getting ready at staging. I like a big swing range...

    SAR Vehicle Photos

Does anyone have pictures of any internal vehicle racking/oragnizing systems you are using? We have a F350 pickup with a topper, equipped with a bed slide. We want to build a rack to organize equipment ,e,g, ropes, hardware, bash bags, O tanks, etc. on the bed slide. Looking for how other folks...

WTB: Search and Rescue 24-Hour Pack Goodies...

Bill, How did it go? A couple of thoughts. Here we double up on a few things (reduce weight), e.g. put rubber bands on your trekking poles to also use as tracking sticks, use a compass with a sighting mirror doubles as a signaling mirror. Some items on the STII list are not kept in the pack...

    Material for shelters

Tyvek. You can gather the material around a small stone in the corners and loop the paracord around it, if you don't have grommets or don't want to punch holes (which will tear out) for any tie down lines. 3 mil drop cloth material also works well, is cheap and light.

    SAR Vehicle Must-Haves..

Ditto, verdesardog, here we use our vehicles to get to the scene and sometimes a containment road patrol. ATV's are used when the terrain gets rough. Vehicles are pack horses, so they need to be uncluttered and ready to load people, personal equipment (24 hour packs) and team gear (ropes...

48 hours - Thursday to Saturday evening

A short write up on a mission and alpine training. The conditions were interesting, e.g. post snow storm (Colorado high country) and wind (St. Mary's Glacier). http://patcaulfield.blogspot.com/2011/10/long-48-hours.html Pat

Insurance: Dodge 4500/5500 Ford F450/550 GMC Kodiak

I ran into this problem when I bought my F450 in 2008. Found out that USAA considers anything above a F350 a commercial vehicle, which they would not insure. Imagine my surprise sitting in the dealers lot in a new truck and not getting any insurance from my carrier of over 30 years. Anyway had...

    back board

I have to ditto DarkHelmet, without the proper training you can cause more damage then good and the current trend in wilderness medicine is away from broad use of back boarding, e.g National Park Service, State of California, Canada, Malayasia, etc. unless there are definitive indicators...
