Getting a Saab back off the road.

A lot of progress, but not much posting. Fitted the tires to the 95 to check clearances: And then... we took it off road. I was trying to get the Bajaab running in time to participate in the Texas Gambler 500, but ran into several unanticipated problems (wiring, and windshield - I found one...

Getting a Saab back off the road.

Was doing some calculations to see how the bigger tires would affect gearing, particularly in 1st as wouldn't want to give up the engine's limited pulling power just to gain 1" of ground clearance. With a 3.5:1 1st gear, 4.88 final, and 27.3" tall tires, I get 12mph (near as makes no difference)...

Finally found a store that had more of these tires! Lots of work coming up on the front end.

What are some of the most reliable old vehicles?

Anybody who works at a new car dealer, and also owns old cars, knows this is patently false. :p New cars, if anything, are less reliable than old ones. My newest car turns 50 next year. It's never left me stranded. It's never needed a major repair. I wouldn't hesitate to drive it cross...

Getting a Saab back off the road.

Bought a Federal Couragia 195/80 R15 tire to test fit... then once I had and could do some rough measurements, I found everybody had them on backorder, so I need three more and can't find any. The only other all terrain tire in this size is a Zeetex AT1000 - which I've never heard of and find...

Getting a Saab back off the road.

looking for rust. Floor is actually in better condition than I thought. Just a few small holes. Poking around with a screwdriver, didn't find anything hiding major. The thinner gauge steel of the firewall has rusted through where it meets the floor, but the much thicker floor is still solid...

Getting a Saab back off the road.

Thanks for the tip. There was a guy literally just down the street from me who ran a Saab shop and loved when I would stop by with my 95, but he had a heart attack and passed away this spring. I know of a few people who are local but finding parts does take some effort. Also, I did watch that...

Getting a Saab back off the road.

Well, it will be coming into the garage either this weekend or next weekend for teardown! We'll see how much work it needs then (hopefully not a lot).

    VW Beetle Classic... questions pre-acquisition

Doghouse probably means it's an oil cooler leak. On the older engines the oil cooler was located inside the fan shroud, but this meant it would overheat the 3 and 4 cylinders, on late model engines they moved it outside of the fan shroud into the "dog house" that sits behind (well, in front of...

    VW Beetle Classic... questions pre-acquisition

On the other hand, the Super Beetle is favored over the torsion-bar suspended beetles for rally use. Wider track and smaller turning radius. Make sure the front end gets a good inspection, they often need new bushings and ball joints.

    VW Beetle Classic... questions pre-acquisition

Interesting video about a Beetle that went around the world in the 1950s: Thought it might be of interest in this thread.

Getting a Saab back off the road.

I would except they charge 3K to enter and don't even have a vintage class appropriate for the Saab. I'm not sure what would happen if I tried to enter one.
