    Omni’s stove top oven

It's fine. Takes a little practice. A lot of boaters use them and they are basically Israeli "wonder pots"--so there are lots of recipes for everything out there.

Best Kitchen spot-- side or tailgate? Bad weather and normal.

I'm too short to cook at tailgate height. All those fancy expedition trailers with built in swingout kitchens are wasted on me. Please y'all, mind the height on these things and be prepared to do all the cooking and cleaning for your shorter fellow travelers! :)

Do you actually use or need a pass thru window from camper to pickup?

I like the sliding rear window on my truck. The window in the camper? Could have skipped it. We put too much junk in there to really appreciate it and both it AND the truck window are too small for anything but a cat to traverse.

Pop-Top Warps and Twists When Loaded in Truck Bed

Nice! The extra storage will be good to have. So this is (was) one of those poptops with the full-size door? I don't think anyone makes them like that anymore due to the structural issues.

Pop-Top Warps and Twists When Loaded in Truck Bed

Back in 2012 when Fords were taller than the others, I bought a Northstar. They had a cheap option that screwed on a platform on the base of the camper for use in a Ford. Basically, you attach the platform to the camper, NOT just have it sitting in the truck. It beefs up the camper floor and...

Pop-up versus hard-side height and fuel economy survey

2012 F350 crewcab 4WD 6.7 diesel shortbed; Northstar TC800 popup with a full buttwrap. Everything (relevant) is stock. Don't know the height offhand. It's no FWC! At ~65 mph I get around 20 mpg with a tonneau cover, around 14 mpg with camper loaded. This varies HUGELY with speed. (The spouse...

Are pop-up campers more popular than hard-side purely due to how they look when mounted on a truck?

There is a pretty good apple-to-apple comparison available for at least one line--but not with the more off-roady makes. Compare Northstar's 7'-wide Laredo and 850SC models. For years (decades?) they were the same except one is a hardside. NS's narrow hardsides are pretty nimble as far as...

Are pop-up campers more popular than hard-side purely due to how they look when mounted on a truck?

I think they all look dopey. Hardsides maybe have more of the grandpa vibe but I don't think any of them are sexy. I can push my Northstar popup into my garage on a dolly (can't do that with a hardside...not MY garage). I can't drive my popup into my garage though. My popup is big enough for...

    New tundra/northstar build

The Torklifts aren't really thaaaat much lower. They do stick out but I've only had a problem with that in...parking lots. (Of course vehicles vary and I don't have a Tundra.) Are you keeping the jacks on?

Would you live in a wedge camper full time?

Think a trailer would be cheaper and more pleasant...

Any pop-top truck campers with sitting room inside WHILE the top is down?

The top-down floor-to-ceiling height of my Northstar tc800 is 59-61", depending on how much extra crap was left on the bed. Seating is definitely usable, be it dinette or portapotty.

Which of these two pop-ups (F250, F350) should I rent for 3 weeks in Alaska?

Probably too late, but unless you're camping with hookups, don't expect to get any use out of the shower...

    '97 Northstar TC650 project

If you haven't contacted Northstar to ask for recommendations for the canvas, you should. I don't know if they are still as good about responding to remarkably random questions about old campers as they were a few years ago, but they were super helpful whenever I contacted them.

To pop up or NOT to pop up

A kid and dog mean you carry more stuff. A popup is less storage-friendly than a hard side. You miss those wall cabinets. All the stuff fits, but there is more shuffling and it can get maddening. (It's not me. I always put things where they go. It's the people I camp with!) I still prefer the...
