Traverse of the Blue Mountains in Oregon.

24 June Enterprise I had parked at the edge of a large canyon and put my tent back about 50 yards from the edge. That night was quite windy, but it came square at the face of the canyon and shot up over my tent. I could hear the big ponderosa pines hissing and whistling all night but the wind...

Traverse of the Blue Mountains in Oregon.

Wednesday 23 June. Another day to be remembered. Overland crossing from Grand Ronde Lake to Ladd Canyon. FR 43 follows a long ridge down from the high mountains. Definitely bumpity. But so pretty, and remote. No other traffic. “Though the road's been rocky it sure feels good to me.”...

Traverse of the Blue Mountains in Oregon.

Tuesday 22 May is a whole brand new day. Clouds roll in coolish. I had camped a few miles from the Middle Fork of the John Day river and the morning saw me refreshed and wearing the cool weather jacket as I set off on some of the prettiest riding you can get. It was maybe 10 miles to Forest...

Not much sleep at all. I was kind of sick to my stomach from the heat and dehydration. About 5 am it was just so nice and cool I just sat there drinking beverages and eating mush. I didn't get going until about 9 am. Very nice forest roads in the Ochoco and little likelihood of seeing...

Traverse of the Blue Mountains in Oregon.

So I've been dithering and blathering about all kinds of expeditions I needed to do SOMETHING There was this gathering of outwardly appearing "normal" people that I've visited before. IF your definition of normal is riding motorcyles AND hanging out in Enterprise, Oregon with people who only...

    Spring on the Olympic Peninsula

It's in a logging area on state land so gates are open irregularly and you might need the state recreation pass.

    Spring on the Olympic Peninsula

Thank you. Just another thing that happens when leave geezers unsupervised. It's a 2017 Africa Twin with an enduro style sidecar that I've boxed in for overlanding. 5 gallon gas and water in the box, solar panel keeps a little deep cycle charged that powers a ham 2 meter transceiver and a...

Off the wall ham "history" question...

I guess if the OP had asked for the time we'd be telling him how to build a watch. Analog. Gears are cool.

Quartz crystals. They have naturally resonant frequencies depending on the size. They were mounted in little cases with plugs after having been measured and ground to size. This controls the frequency of the main oscillator or the first stage of rf before it's amplified. On those labels...

Solo trip through the North Cascades on three wheels.

Good roads but looks like it could get crowded in peak summer days. There are ATV areas and 4wd roads but those are marked and all others are bumpy but ok for cars. No loops but down by Entiat you can find hundreds of roads.

Solo trip through the North Cascades on three wheels.

A brand new day. Headed down to Lake Chelan on a much clearer day. Fuel in Chelan the up to 25 mile Creek and up the Shady Pass road. Then I made a really short day of it and set up a guard station on Grouse Mountain. Standing a vigil against the forces of evil is a dirty job but...

Solo trip through the North Cascades on three wheels.

The next day it was over a pass down into Gold Creek and then up the south fork of Gold Creek to the Cooper Mountain road following the ridge above Lake Chelan. Getting pretty smoky. Um... Lake Chelan And then a perfect day turned into an adventure <sigh> which 4...
