Mattersnots

Months after my divorce I was at work contemplating the new path my life was taking. A commercial came on the TV touting the new BlueRay player. Do we really need a BlueRay player? How crisp of a picture is crisp enough? I guess I’ll need a new TV to get the best picture with this new device. This will never end, will it? Mortgage, new cars, clothes, bigger house. Why do we do this? If I was on my death bed, would I feel my time was used wisely. Within a week I decided to make major changes in my life. I started saving every penny and put an 18 month count down timer on my computer.

I began selling all the useless crap accumulated over the years. I did all of the preventative maintenance my health insurance would allow. The dentist really liked replacing my old fillings and the gastroenterologist was happy to run his scope in yet another area where the sun doesn’t shine. Before long I had my home rented, and monthly bills down to hundreds instead of thousands. When the timer hit 17.5 months, I gave notice at work. Soon after, I packed my van and headed to Baja, a place where I had felt the most free and full of life.

I’m 50 going on 35 now and folks tell me I’m not normal. This I consider a compliment. Stepping out of the rat race is one of the smartest things I’ve ever done. My current lifestyle is a dream come true. I’m not working, choosing instead to live off rental income and savings. I’ve learned to live cheaply enjoying life rather than things. I spend most of the winter on the Baja Penninsula in Mexico playing volleyball, riding mountain bikes, and kitesurfing. The summers will find me exploring the US and Canada, enjoying the outdoors as much as possible.

Enjoy Life, Tom.
