Of course! Glad you found it helpful. I'm watching your video now.
I also want to thank you for your Steens video! That single video inspired my trip there last fall. It's an incredible area and I found out about it from you...so thanks again!
Next up for me...Olallie Lake. :)

On my last trip out, I used GaiaGPS. It does have some really good features, but it just wasn't as user friendly from a user interface perspective. I still MUCH prefer the larger buttons provided by MotionX.
I learned the hard way that none of the options in the...
@tdesanto, I haven't tried BirdsEye...trying to limit my subscription expenses. And I haven't really found the need for satellite at least in the places I've been going. Most roads here are pretty well mapped, especially on US Forest Service land.
I've found it pretty easy to get my edited routes mixed up in Basecamp. Editing is pretty easy. But keeping track of the different versions or even accidentally deleting the tracks makes it a little confusing...to me anyway.
I've had the same result with MyMaps. You can get a rough track created in MyMaps, and then edit it in either Google Earth Pro (GEP) or Basecamp.
To edit in GEP, refer to the video.
I believe editing works similarly in Basecamp (in fact, removing large portions of a track is easier because...
You can visit CalTopo.com and register a user account. The free account gives you all the basic functionality, but to get the maps into Google Earth, you sign up for the $20/yr option.
To do that, you click on your name in the upper left corner and I believe you can do it on the "Account"...
You don't. In fact it's even easier to email them to yourself from your computer. Then setup email on your mini iPad and grab the attached files directly on the iPad.
As my Dad used to say: this one is '6 of one and half a dozen of the other'.
I've had enough frustrations with cloud solutions (i have enough user accounts everywhere already...usernames/passwords/new devices need relinking/etc). that I just tend to prefer an old school hard drive with backup...
@traveldud that mount is from www.proclipusa.com. They aren't cheap, but you can get exactly what you need and it's a more modular system so it's very customizable.
Hey all,
I found a lot of helpful info here and around the web and thought I'd condense what I found and now use for my trip planning into a video. Most of what I found was specific to a particular app or piece of hardware, so this is more of an end to end overview. Surely it's not the best...
You might also check out the Tascam DR-05. Very similar in purpose and features to the Zoom mentioned above, but seems to me to have a better user interface and button setup.
Tascam DR-05 at Amazon
I might also confirm that I actually own it, use it and like it.
+1 on this.
I've used this setup with a ProClips USA mount on two trips and it works really well. I haven't figured out how, but I've read that the iPad can piggyback on Delorme's GPS receiver and use less battery that way. I have to keep my iPad plugged in, but am still very happy with...
