Compass

You will always have deviation caused by the of all the steel in your vehicle. A high quality magnetic compass will have adjustment screws to compensate for the magnetic influences of your vehicle. To adjust you would head your vehicle in all direction and note the difference and make minor...

Is there an easy way to create and edit gpx files

Since you have a Mac, there is a app you can download called GPX editor. It pairs with Garmin Basecamp very well.

    Help for overland navigation

Answer Yes you can use your laptop for navigation. You will have to purchase or fab a laptop mount and a substantial piece of interior space to mount it. Purchase an external GPS antenna and navigation software. The bonus is the storage space on your computer for digital maps...

How good is Gaia for multiday trips?

Dale, would definitely plan to use Gaia on your iPad for your multi-day journey. I've used Gaia on multi-day trips all over the world with no problems. Have you got the Gaia pro version? It comes with many more and useful map layers. I would guess that with 128 gigs you could download detailed...

    Garmin GLO GPS

I've been using the Garmin GLO for 3-4 years now. I use it with my iPad without a service plan. I've come to like and depend on an external GPS receiver. The advantage for me is having GPS connectivity without a cell service plan, anytime and where (unless I loose SAT connection)

In Gaia which maps do you like?

Overlays are where its at!! I really like professional membership because you have a wide and varied map layer access. For example I have loaded these three layers (Public Land, USFS MVUM, and Gaia too) viewing a recent jaunt in the Coconino NF. Plenty of detail.

    New BFG KO2 34x10.5x17! 100 Series

I've been running a set of BFG34x10.517 KO2 on my Camp Rig since last fall. They've been great. Tall skinny pizza cutters are the in thing. [/IMG]

Moving forward and upwards (Desktop Planning/GPS/Tablet)

The simplest method which works together in harmony would be to use Garmin GPS device with BaseCamp on your computer. If you download the particular North America maps from Garmin onto your computer you will be able to view it on BaseCamp. I would ditch the computer while on the road and go...

How would you design a vehicle for rescue in flooding and snow?

disclaimer: #1 I don't know what your budget is. #2 This is what I would consider. older vehicle- engineered simple, strong, and common enough readily to get parts. drive train - low gears, locking differential, manual transmission, toquey engine, tall...

Running battery cable into truck bed for dual battery setup

Good eye, but what you can't see are the fuses behind the black plastic cover (along the fender). Also this is an older pic, the solar panel wires are directly to the battery via a 6 awg quick disconnect (it's hanging out of the grill)

Running battery cable into truck bed for dual battery setup

I run a dual battery in my 2010 Silverado to power the camper and winch. I have used this set up extensively with no problems. Well I did run out of juice after a four day camp which is why I use the solar panels now. under the hood parts: Painless Wiring solenoid, 550 CCA battery, tapped into...

    2013 Silverado 1500 Build Thread

I like the look of the bumper design. I have a 2010 which I replaced both bumpers with steel units. The weight difference was close to 150 lbs. I couldn't believe how light weight the stockers were but for MPG sake I understand why. Feedback - what do you plan to do with the truck? After all...
