    Breaking the Law in California

The CARB rules limit the kinds of cans that can be sold, but don't say anything about what an individual can own or use. You're not breaking any air pollution laws. There may be motor vehicle laws requiring use of DOT approved containers, but that's not specific to California.

    REI, Politics and Public Lands

Sorry, I wasn't trying to be obscure. I was just looking for documentation that REI is trying to close down all trails and couldn't find it. The first was a list of donations to political candidates from REI employees and a report about lobbying activities and the second was the same, but...

    Bundu Box Substitue?

Yep, I just got two from Amazon. I've never seen a Bundu box in person so I can't do a direct comparison, but these Plano boxes are strong enough to stand on and look like they'll last. The latches are okay but not great, pretty similar to Action Packers.

    REI, Politics and Public Lands

Like what? They sell lots of gear for car camping. How is that different from "motorized overlanding"? If there are specific products that you/we/the community would like them to carry, I bet they'd be interested in hearing about it. I can respect that. Personally I have a long list of...

What camera do you carry on the trails?

Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3 Rolleicord V loaded with Ektar 100 iPhone 4s (but I hardly ever use it (as a camera)) My big toy purchase for the year was a lift kit for the Jeep, but next time I splurge it will be on a mirrorless camera. I really like what I've heard about the Olympus OM-D E-M5, but...

    Camping Without a Campfire?

There are plenty of campfires up there in the sky. Sure, they're kind of far away, but a basic telescope makes them a lot easier to see...

Is my old Garmin worth using?

I had one of those and had nothing but trouble with it. If I was under trees or if I'd even put it in my pocket, I'd lose the satellite signal. I upgraded to a more recent etrex a couple of years ago and haven't had any problems since. If you're just starting out with GPSes, I think you'd be...
