VW Touareg V6 Diesel Overland Build thread

Yep, http://msog.org/ has a link to it and a new maintainer- PM me if you want to talk more about M boats but I don't want to drive this thread too far off topic :)

    New CHEAP satellite messenger!

This looks excellent! It looks like you can also use it without the phone to call SOS in emergencies. However, now that this is on the market, I wouldn't be surprised if SPOT reduces their prices to compete with it. In addition to a SPOT, I also carry a RESCUEME PLB1 PLB, which I think was $280...

VW Touareg V6 Diesel Overland Build thread

Good luck! They are hard to find, but if you're willing to travel anywhere there is almost always one available... If you join both the e-mail list, and the "Montgomery Sailboats" facebook group, and say you are looking, you can get ahold of people that are thinking about selling but haven't...

VW Touareg V6 Diesel Overland Build thread

Thanks! Surprised to see someone on here that knows what an M15 is. I loved that boat and had a lot of great adventures over a decade, but just sold it and got a Sage 17, which I guess is pretty similar.

VW Touareg V6 Diesel Overland Build thread

Yeah, I doubt it... they never sold these with the rear diff lock either, but it can be retrofit from a V10. Possibly some confusion with VW calling their computer traction control system "Electronic Differential Lock" or EDL. The EDL system is so effective that I'm not sure a front locker would...

2013 Porsche Cayenne Diesel test drive

I know this is a decade old thread... but it's not true that the Cayenne and Touareg don't have low range- they both had low range in 2010 and earlier models. Porsche didn't start selling the diesel until after they dropped low range, so you need a Touareg if you want low range and diesel. Note...

VW Touareg V6 Diesel Overland Build thread

Sure, here it is: link I only paid $97 for it, the price seems to fluctuate, but it seems good quality and simple. I also got the "hitch tightener clamp" shown in "frequently bought together."

    Budget VW T3 Conversion

Very cool! That will be a fun adventure vehicle for a good price! Have you considered doing a westfalia pop-top conversion vs adding a roof tent? It's pretty unique that it's a factory option for these, already made, and possible to find on wrecked vans, but I imagine a really big project.

    Hook Vs Loop?

Makes sense... this is exactly the type of thing I would worry about while everyone else just drives around using their synthetic winch lines in full sun with no problems :ROFLMAO:

    Hook Vs Loop?

Thanks, but my winch is actually enclosed in the bumper, it's just the eye on the hook that is exposed to UV. The aluminum shackle mount above entirely encloses the rope eye, so it's out of the sun. It seems like Factor 55 also makes a hook that does this, but it costs a lot more. My only...

    Hook Vs Loop?

I feel like a hook is more convenient, but I can't find a good solution to keep it from rattling around and scratching things, or to keep the synthetic line totally protected from UV. I am going to switch from a hook to the "fandangle alum thing" alia mentioned above.

    INEOS Grenadier

The Grenadier seems like a cool vehicle, and I don't mean to be overly negative about it, but I don't understand the logic of the Grenadier... the whole point seems to be the ability to do a modern clean slate design, yet it seems to be anachronistic to it's own detriment. A purpose built heavy...

Is the roof tent trend over?

On April 3rd we got stuck in an incredible wind storm in Owens Valley area, 60+ mph gusts, and saw three overturned semis and a 5th wheel trailer blown over, and they eventually closed 395 to trucks. We went down into Death Valley to get out of the wind somewhat, but regular ground tents were...

where are the Porsche cayenne expo builds?

I'm not sure what your concern is about the K02s, but these already mounted were less than I could buy the wheels for anywhere else, bought from a guy that couldn't fit them over the brakes on his Cayenne. They're 17" wheels, which seem to be the best OEM Touareg wheel for offroad use for models...
