Expedition Portal Classifieds: 2003 Discovery TReK

When most people think of Land Rover competitions, they almost always envision the Camel Trophy: its Sand Glow trucks spinning, bumping, and even swimming through rugged terrain has become one of the brand’s most iconic pieces of heritage, but it’s far from the only competition they held. Take the TReK, for example, an event designed to boost morale and increase four-wheel-drive skills throughout the North American dealer network. It began as a friendly challenge in 1996, but with each year it grew in popularity until Land Rover eventually made it a global competition, using vehicles like the Range Rover p38, and Discovery IIs like this one.

In fact, this Discovery is actually one of the few used in the 2003 competition held at the Forbes Ranch in Colorado and looks to be in fantastic shape. It has just 85,000 miles on the odometer, is rust free, and needs absolutely nothing according to the owner. Given that he runs a Land Rover repair shop, we’re inclined to believe him. All of the graphics and paint look like new, and the interior is immaculate, to say the least. It even has the original lights, roof rack, and bumpers which are hard or impossible to come by.

A truck this rare and in this sort of shape isn’t cheap, of course. The seller is asking $25,500 USD, but they will deliver it for free on a trailer within 300 miles of Dallas and negotiate further distances.

Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, Chris didn’t receive a real taste of the outdoors until moving to Prescott, Arizona, in 2009. While working on his business degree, he learned to fly and spent his weekends exploring the Arizona desert and high country. It was there that he fell in love with backcountry travel and four-wheel drive vehicles, eventually leading him to Overland Journal and Expedition Portal. After several years of honing his skills in writing, photography, and off-road driving, Chris now works for the company full time as Expedition Portal's Senior Editor while living full-time on the road.
