VW’s Tristar Concept

The interwebs have been buzzing all week with the release of this outstandingly cool VW Tristar concept truck. Recently unveiled in Hanover at the IAA Commercial Vehicle Show, it was designed to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the original Syncro concept and it is quite a head turner.

Powered by a 2.0-liter TDI engine that produces 201 hp and 331 pound-feet of torque, it has a seven speed transmission paired to VW’s 4Motion all-wheel drive system. The tall stance and 17-inch wheels combined with the sharp no-nonsense lines of the exterior make this vehicle appear ready to tackle anything thrown before it.

The cabin eschews the brand’s former austere approach to creature comforts and is trimmed with only the finest materials and features. The rich leather and design-forward aesthetic of the interior looks prime for long days on the road or trail.

It’s a fun exercise in theory, but as we all know, concept cars are often just teasing glimpses into what could be possible if the powers that be felt so inclined to bring them to fruition. Until then, we’ll have to make do with the current, albeit aging, inventory of Tristars still on the road.
