The Sexiest Overland Campers You'll See All Day

E-mail Print PDF

alt

If you're a regular follower, you've undoubtedly seen countless overland vehicles among like likes of the Land Rover Defender, Jeep Wrangler, and Toyota Land Cruiser. But what you probably haven't seen are the big boys—the overland campers, that's because they're rarely found in North America, and it's not something you see every day. But luckily between the Abenteuer und Allrad show in Germany and the Overland Expo in the United States, we've been able to find a few. Generally built upon the likes of heavy-duty Ford trucks, Mercedes Unimogs, and MANN missile platforms, these vehicles will take you around the world in total comfort. Often outfitted with everything you'd find at home, from a dish-washer, washer and dryer, hardwood floors and the whole kitchen sink, its more like living in a small apartment than a vehicle. We just don't want to see the gas bill.

Check it out here.

La Aduana: Unimog 416-Based 4x4 Camper

E-mail Print PDF

via West County Explorers Club: Here's an unusual find from Expo's forums. This 4x4 camper started life in 1977 as one of five custom-designed maintenance trucks commissioned for the Netherlands Railway Authority. In 1995 the rear utility cab was retired in favor of a camping unit outfitted to house up to four people. Very handy, since the DoKa cab seats up to four as well.

From what I can glean from the posts, truck has covered about 75,000 miles. It has 8 forward gears, 4 reverse, and high-speed axles. It carries about 100 gallons of water and about 140 gallons of fuel, giving a range of 1400 miles, give or take. The owner is asking $24,000, however, there is a catch.

The original, normally-aspirated OM352 engine is shot. The current owner has sourced a new turbocharged motor which is included in the sale and needs to be installed. In an additional wrinkle, turbocharger is said to make the motor 4" taller, thus precluding it from fitting into the old engine compartment. Some have suggested a cab lift. Others have suggested relocating the turbo.

Are you interested in taking on this near-one-of-a-kind expedition vehicle? Here's a link to the forum post. The truck is located in Portland.

More photos after the jump.

La Aduana: Vintage Airstream Overlander

E-mail Print PDF

Believe it or not, in the 1960's Airstream took 35 trailers the entire length of Africa from Capetown to Cairo to prove the durability of the iconic aluminum bodied, aerodynamic travel trailers on not only paved, but unpaved roads. Even if you tried, it would be quite difficult for an overlander to find a more perfect Airstream than the one we've found on eBay Motors. Why? Because this particular model of the iconic aluminum bodied, aerodynamic camper is actually named the...of all things...The Airstream Overlander.

La Aduana: Unimog eXtreme RV

E-mail Print PDF

alt

You're looking at the first eXtreme RV (XRV) built by Global Expedition Vehicles. It's based on the Mercedes Unimog, a durable round-the-world capable platform with plenty of traction and a reliable diesel engine. Offered for sale at $185,000, some may initially balk at the purchase price, but consider the cost and rarity of the chassis, and that over $600,000 went into the initial build of the vehicle and it was proven via a sucessful tour of South America after it's completion. The vehicle is almost completely self contained and the ample interior space provides a climate controlled comfortable living environment. The current owners have just returned from 3 years of continuous adventure travel and have decided to settle back down.

(Image of outgoing model, not consistent with new design)

For years now we've been waiting for All Terrain Warriors to leave their native Australia and offer their fantastic 4WD campers to customers here in the United States. Finally, today is the day, they've just signed a strategic partnership with Sportsmobile West to import the campers, such as the Commando shown above, and assemble them on two different chassis available in the US: The Ford F-450 Cab/Chassis, and the Mitsubishi Fuso. They will also be working on a brand new model over the next few months, likely to be released at the Overland Expo.

La Aduana: VW Vanagon Westfalia TDI

E-mail Print PDF

If you're the kind of person who wants to live in a van down by the river...in Botswana, then this might just be your vehicle. The Westfalia is almost overland ready straight from the factory, it has a kitchen and a fold out out bed so you're comfortable nearly anywhere. This "Westy" as they're called has a distinct advantage over the other models on the market right now—it has a TDI engine out of a VW Jetta, so it has more power, and most importantly the engine produces significantly better fuel economy numbers. The Vanagon is incredibly easy to repair, and parts are available nearly everywhere in the world.

La Aduana: 1975 Pinzgauer 710M

E-mail Print PDF

alt

The Pinzgauer, to say the least, is an interesting vehicle, it was designed by Steyr-Daimler-Puch in the late 60's to be a light multi-purpose military vehicle that was incredibly easy to repair in the field. Unique to the Pinzgauer is it's air-cooled, flat-four engine with two carburetors and multiple oil pumps to ensure that the engine always has oil no matter what angle it's at. Also attributing to it's off-highway prowess was the fitting as standard of cross-axle locking differentials. They're somewhat rare, although more and more are being imported to the United States as they become eligible. This 1975 model appears to be in good condition with low miles and a 12 volt converter so you can run your accessories.
