With its classic looks and utilitarian design, the Toyota HJ47 Troop Carrier has a rugged elegance that manages to capture my imagination while still maintaining that trademark Toyota reliability. Based on the smaller FJ40, the Troop Carrier features a longer wheel base, seating for up to eleven, and in later models, some additional engine options. The combination of this much needed cargo space with the renowned durability of the traditional 40 series has established the larger troop carrier as an exceptional platform for overland travel. Unfortunately, finding them in North America can be a difficult task, especially if you want one that runs well and won't cost you your life savings. This HJ47 isn't much when you first look at it, but it has just undergone a restoration on many of the major components and is ready for its next adventure.
At the core of this Toyota lies its original 2H diesel engine. This inline six has covered 213,000 miles, but was recently rebuilt and certified by a Toyota mechanic as in "great running condition". The transfer case and starter were also rebuilt and then attached to the freshly sandblasted and painted chassis. To ensure this Troopy would be comfortable as well as durable on long drives, it does have two diesel tanks after all, the owner installed a new Old Man Emu suspension, updated seating, Rhino-lined floors, and five brand new tires. As a finishing touch this wonderful Land Cruiser includes a 10,000lb Warn winch and a new safari snorkel to help you get through almost any situation you find yourself in. With so few HJ47s available, and its recent restoration, I think this vehicle is definitely one to see. Plus, with the money you save on the low price tag, you could even afford to paint the hood its proper color.
Here's a look at what the seller has to say:
This is a rare 1981 HJ47 right hand drive Toyota Troop Carrier that has been meticulously rebuilt. This vehicle was stripped down and rebuilt half-up with genuine Toyota parts. Bottom down was checked and certified by a Toyota mechanic as "in great running condition". Work includes the rebuilt 2H engine, sandblasted chassis, newly installed Toyota custom wiring, rebuilt transfer case, new shackles and bushes, new OME suspension, rebuilt starter and alternator and installed power steering. Interior cabin has been upgraded with newer, comfortable seats, new upholstery on the headliner, Alpine CD player, stainless steel door panels, rhino guard on floor and sides. New Hela headlights and a 10,000 lb Warn winch are featured on the front. Five brand new Wrangler 75R16 tires set in stainless steel rims give a smooth ride. The dual diesel tanks will ensure that you can cruise in style and turn heads all the way to your destination, no matter how far. Anew Safari snorkel comes with the truck to get you sailing through the water.
