perhaps some of you guys might be interested in this - http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11219524&whse=BC&Ne=4000000&N=4015373&Mo=13&No=3&Nr=P_CatalogName:BC&cat=50829&Ns=P_Price|1||P_SignDesc1&Sp=C&topnav=

don't really know how good the quality of this rack is, cosnidering some coleman products kinda lack in quality, but who knows, for $75 might be worse a try...

You can’t beat $75 no matter how you look at it. From the image it looks like it does have substantial metal to take some abuse. Even if it does not work you can always give it away. Donate it to a person like the one in the image and maybe you will see the same dorky smile the model has. :hehe:

You wanna talk about perfect timing - I was just saying in the car on the way home how I wished I could find an inexpensive roof basket long enough to fit my rack rails so I wouldn't have to switch back and forth between a Surco rack, rails w/cargo box, and nothing at all (for parking garage) - and bingo - I get home and see this!!

I just ordered one, and will give a full report on construction quality and general usefulness.

Hopefully the mounts will fit on my aero-style crossbars without any problem.

Bonus on the price - shipping is free (don't opt for express shipping - it is more than the basket itself!), although they will charge you tax, and I had to pay a whopping 3.75 extra since I'm not a member.

I have the exact rack. its made by www.sportrack.com they rebrand them for Coleman, Canadian tire etc.

Its a pretty good rack. It bolts together in two pieces which I thought would be weak but its been pretty good. They make an extension kit for it that lengthens it out.

for $75 its pretty good deal.

Mine finally came today. It is exactly what I wanted! Not real heavy duty, but it should do exactly what I wanted a rack for. If only my cap would get back from the body shop (for painting) I can figure out the mounting. Thanks for posting this deal up...

mtnbike28,
Can you tell if there would be a good way to mount a spare in this thing? That's the main reason I'm looking for a basket, I'm going to a full size spare as soon as my oem tires die and I upsize...

Thanks!

Telescooby,

Yes, I think a spare would be fine, either strapped down or a floor could easily be mounted on the cross bars of the rack, spreading the weight.

Is this for the Forester?

TeleScooby

Is this for the Forester?

Yup...the spare tire well is just the right size if you run the stock tire size, but then you lose the storage organizer and support for the cargo floor. And since I almost always have two dogs back there, I need that support...SO, the spare's gonna have to go up top once I to to a larger tire.

Thanks for the info, think I'll order one up next paycheck...

I bought one.

It arrived three days earlier than expected. It is just the right size and looks really good. The mounts work great with the Bravada rack that I have on my S-10 Crew cab.
It has a slightly textured satin finish. The bars appear to be about the thickness of conduit. The bars are tack welded, not welded all around.
I think it is plenty sturdy for a light weight basket. I would not be afraid to stack it with stuff to be tied down. It mentioned a 110 lb rating. As long as you do not exceed the factory racks rating I think that amount would work just fine.

I am not a real fan of baskets. This one had a price that seemed really good. I think it was a good deal, we will see how it holds up.

It goes down the road quietly. No howling or vibration.

Thank you for the "heads-up" on this one. I like it!

It showed up - woohoo!

I was surprised - this is a pretty nice basket, especially when you factor in the price. For the Trooper, it could stand to be a smidge bigger, but it still looks ok, and quality of construction is good.

I'll take a few pics tomorrow before I take it back off (so I can get into the parking garage). Coleman logo comes right off of the air defector, btw.

Good deal, even if the guy in the ad looks goofy.

Here it is on a 3rd gen. Sorry for the weak picture, but its cold out today.

Had it on since last summer, no problems. Haven't carried anything heavy, but have carried camp chairs, etc... several times. I wish it was about 8" longer, but for the price I can't complain.

Have had to tighten the clamps a few times, I typically just check them before I load it, and almost always need to give them a couple turns.

Great info. I've been looking on/off for a couple days. Costco only has about 250 racks left in stock....I'm guessing that Thule is closing that competion basket off the market - and keeping the hitch rack line I keep seeing on all the SportRack dealer sites.

I did notice that the price for the extension is more than the Costco rack!! Too funny. Guess I'll have to look at mounting a double rack instead....hmmm (or do more with less -who would ever think of THAT!).

01-04-2008, 10:35 PM
That is a great find.

It looks like the bottom of the basket has a different layout than the Black Widow. It may fit; I would want to do a test fit first.

If anyone in my area has one of the Costco Sport Racks, I have the Black Widow basket extension, if you want to test fit.

Is the front of the Coleman/SportRack basket angled, like the Black Widow basket, or is the front edge of the basket vertical, with only the fairing angled? It appears from the pix to be angled.

Also, Is the faring the 44" (longer side rather than the short side)? Wondering if I could mount it sideways as a different option?

It looks like you could mount it just about any way you want. The front and back are angled. But the front has the attach holes for the fairing....

Costco sold out of them a few weeks ago, but I checked last night and they are back. Order them quickly though, because they are a special purchase and will sell out again. I also read somewhere that Thule bought Sport Rack, who makes these, so I don't know if they are just getting rid of old inventory or what. I wish the rack was longer. unfortunately, the extension cost more than the whole rack! For the price ($75), you can't beat it...

Here is the new link b/c its a different catalog number:

I mounted Yakima Q-Towers & 58in cross bars to hold up the basket.
I also have one of these to put up top
http://www.rackattack.com/dynamicimages/productimages/thule-605-ascent.jpg

I just got the towers up yessterday & running around town with the bars sure makes a lot of wind noise. I'll need to remove them running around town because of the noise.

The basket will easily attach to the bars. I don't have a DBL Cab photo.
I believe the basket comes with an air deflector that mounts on the front; but it does not prevent air from whistling under it.
I had to mount a Yakima air deflector, to eliminate the wind noise under the basket. This deflector attaches to the lower bar, and rests against the roof, in front of the basket. It worked great. I'm shure every installation will be different, concerning wind noise and driver's tolerance.

I think you can see both deflectors in this photo.

On my 4runner, mounted right behind the sun roof, I found the noise tolerable with no wind guard. Certainly no more than the Thule case I run in the winter. With the sun roof closed and the radio on I don't hear it at all. YMMV.

It is not designed for gutter mounts, and needs the support of a pair of cross bars. You could use a pair of cross bars, that are very close to the roof. The crosss bars could be gutter mounted.

The basket is relatively narrow. The cross bars might allow for attaching a few extra items, outside the basket.

I had the same problem. I bought the extension a week later when I found one. The tubes definitely didn't match, but I took care of that problem! I used a peice of steel inside of the tube and twisted slightly to bend it to the correct spot. It took a few times but I got it....

$60 with shipping still included is pretty unbelievable! if you think you'll ever want a rack but can't justify 300+ this is about as good a deal as you'll ever find!

I got mine a few weeks ago and am very happy with it. Not being able to leave well enough alone I immediately started to hack it up by welding some 3/16th plates between the upper and lower rails to provide mounting space for a shovel and axe. I was doing everything I could with proper "technique" to weld two very different metal thicknesses but still blew through the tube in a few spots. so be very careful if you decide to weld on the rack! The welds are fairly gross due to the extreme thickness variation so i've decided to grind them and lay a 2nd bead in a few places before paint. I'll post up some pics when done.

Room for 2 NATO cans & I'll need to trim the wood board for the CO2 tank to fit against the back bed wall.

I'm a bit far south, but I don't mind storing it for a few months until you make it down this way. Shoot me a pm if you'd like me too.

Just picked one up $66.78 shipped.

I didnt get retarded drunk on my 21st birthday last month so I figured I deserved to splurge. Now if I could only get my Jeep to start I would be golden.

Anyone know how soon I can expect it?

Does the rack come with the clamps to secure to a yakima round bar?
The Costco page and the Coleman site doesnt specifically mention it other than it easily install in minutes.

Ill probably use this to carry two Nato fuel cans.

Thanks.

No idea how it clamps on. I was planning on making some clamps myself because this basket needs to fit between my overhead lights and my 2m/440 antenna that are all mounted on my forward load bar.

wow

thanks for the tip. ordered one myself. also ordered a cool kitchen table. Best part is if you don't like it. You can return it to your local costco.

I am only using half. and will be turning it into a rear cargo shelf in my JK rubicon.

Mine came in this afternoon. It's about as big as a full sized axe.

http://dana.ucc.nau.edu/~dz29/cars/Trooper/Coleman1.jpg

It does come with clamps to mount it. The only thing I don't like is that the clamps use hand fastened bolts (makes the rack easy to steal). But, that's an easy fix, just a run to the hardware store.

Here are lots of pictures on a '04 tacoma with 3/16th plate welded on the sides and quickfists for the axe and shovel. To test it I threw about 200 lbs of firewood wood up there and was surprised to see there was very little flex in the basket, I was expecting much more to be honest. I would have no problem putting water/gas up there aside from the obvious center of gravity rise. I couldn't be happier with it and I even paid $75 instead of $60!

I hope that everyone that wanted one, got one.

If you check Costco's site now, the racks have been removed. Glad I got mine! It arrived today - it's going on top of my Expedition Trailer.

You need to move that. The drip rails on the fiberglass top will not handle that.

You need to hit a Leer store and they have a set of metal brackets that can be bolted to the side of the top to suport the weight.

:) I've already have a set of the thule artificial gutters on order, another set of feet and two more cross bars. Just the weight of my hi-lift cracked the fiberglass in one spot. I won't add any weight until I get the new loadbars and metal gutters. I want two load bars over the cab, and two on the cap.

Not to resurrect a dead thread, but wanted to update folks...this basket is now selling under the Sportrack name(they made it all along) for $180!!!

If you want accessories like the net I just ordered, or the extension, ORS Racks Direct carries all their stuff:

ORS (http://www.orsracksdirect.com/sportrack-car-rack-systems.html)

I'm going to get the basket mounted to the RAV4 this weekend and I'll get a pic or two posted...show y'all what a softroader can do!
