I am a big fan of Toyota trucks - Hilux, Tacoma, 4Runner and Land Cruiser.

My first experience with Mr. Toyoda's legacy came in the form of a used '79 Toyota Hilux 3/4 ton long bed with a 20R/4 speed tranny, an old school Timberline shell, and some rust. That thing ran like a swiss watch and never complained through almost 200,000 miles of abuse from me with nothing but routine maintenance and tires. So began my love affair with all things Toyota.

My second Toyota was a 1988 4Runner 4WD SR5 with the 22RE, R151 5-spd, and all factory options. That thing could go anywhere I pointed it with ease so long as I didn't try to go fast uphill on a long highway grade! 1st Gen 4Runners are solid machines and excellent off road in all conditions.

My third Toyota was a 2002 Toyota Tacoma TRD PreRunner Xtra-Cab with the V6 in Lunar Mist which my wife sold when I was in Iraq in 2003. I came home to my fourth Toyota, a brand new 2003 Toyota Tacoma TRD 4WD SR5 Xtra-Cab in Lunar Mist. We quickly outgrew the cab size which brings us to my fifth and "final" Toyota, a 2005 Toyota Tacoma TRD 4WD Double Cab in Silver Streak Mica with all available factory options.

The 2005+ Tacoma was based on the international Land Cruiser Prado 120 chassis and came the 1GR-FE 4.0 Liter V6 gasoline engine that produces 236 horsepower (176 kW) and 266 ft·lbf (361 N·m) torque. This Tacoma is the North American version of the Toyota Hilux pickup sold in international markets.

The project vehicle was purchased new in February 2005 at Toyota of San Juan Capistrano, CA, with a build date of January 2005. It is one of the very first trucks of this generation built at NUMMI in Fremont, CA, USA http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NUMMI and was a dealer trade from Reno, Nevada.

My buildup is an ongoing strategic process of parts selection and vehicle modification focusing on reliability, durability, and comfort in the field. The end result of all the time, money, sweat, and busted knuckles has been all the great memories made while enjoying the wonders of Overlanding in North America with family and friends!

Spark Plugs: If it's your first time changing the plugs, you will notice that the Driver Side has NGK, and the passenger has Denso Plugs. Toyota has been doing this for eons, and I really cant confirm why they do this.

Using 6 identical Denso plugs is what I recommend, gapped @ .040 to .041. OEM does not use iridium so I recommend non-iridium plugs per OEM engine build specs.

I have an '06 with the factory shell. I'm getting it ready for some light off-road camping and the like. One day when I have Scott's budget I'll go a bit further.

For now, I have some Thule rack parts to install on the shell, various tools/axe/shovel/rope and the like in the back, some Hella Rallye 4000s on order, and will also buy a Kenwood dual-band transceiver soon.

This weekend, I'm going to remove the front mudflaps. :ylsmoke:

After visiting SEMA this year, the parts are coming... There were more 05 Tacos on display than any other model, and the bumpers, caps, lockers, suspension, etc. is all coming out.

ARB has released the new 05 Bull Bar, and the front locker can now be sourced. Deaver and Donahoe have released suspension systems as well.

You are doing the right thing, focusing on the camping equipment. This type of fourwheeling puts an emphasis on camping and passenger comfort, as so many days and nights are spent in the bush.

I am really looking forward to following this build.

Hey guys with 05's.

If you are looking for something small to do, and you have the factory tow package, you probably want to remount the 7 pin connector. I nearly ripped it off on the first real 4wd trip I took the taco on.

The connector plate unbolts from the tow subframe. I cut out a section of the rear bumper and then remounted it next to the license plate.

Nice cheap mod that prevents you from ripping the thing off of the tow hitch.

I have the SnugTop XVision shell on mine which works out really well.

I also mounted my Kenwood D700a and my Garmin 276C, they are hooked up so that I can broadcast APRS Packets (position reports). Check out http://www.findu.com/cgi-bin/find.cgi?call=KI6AZC-2)

So electronically at least I am on my way.

I am waiting for more options on the lifts, although it seems like either the Donahoe or Camburg COs are the way to go in front, I don't want to go with the Deaver 10 pack as it is only 1.5" and the between the shell, rock sliders, gear and any bumper I get, I want to get more payload capacity if possible.

Hey, Chris, do you have any pictures of your Kenwood installation that you would share? I'm probably going to get the same radio. I was thinking of puting the display in the center cubby hole, under the HVAC controls.

UncleChris
12-10-2005, 03:07 AM
Sure thing.

Here is a picture of where the body is mounted behind the rear seat. There are three keyhole slots back there that you can slide a bolt into.

The other is a cockpit view. I got the aftermarket Scosche kit for the stereo. I put the mounting bracket for the Kenwood in the empty space and mounted the display there. I zip tied the cables together and ran them under the floormats and console up to the front. I need to do some work behind the dash to bury the wire to the display yet.

On the right of the console I have an angle bracket that has the 276c mounted on top and my CB unit hanging underneath against the console.

Let me know if you need any more detail. The cubby would be nice, but I really like where I have it because I can flip through repeaters without really taking my eyes off the road. The other thing the D700 lets you do is list who's making APRS broadcasts, so you can see who is on the road.

Also note the convenient place for the garage door opener and the mike holder........

Nice install Chris,

Do you have upgraded covers on your seats?

asteffes
12-10-2005, 06:45 PM
I like it, Chris. My other reason for considering the lower mounting location for the display is that it's a bit les visible from outside, which might keep some theives away. I suppose you can just take the display down when you want with some Velcro, but that would be a bit less solid.

I'm also curious about your seat covers and those heavy rubber mats. Very nice!

UncleChris
12-10-2005, 07:23 PM
Thanks guys!

The rears are wet Okoles, dog hair added by Elsa the Ridgeback. The fronts are the TRDs, which are not as functional as the Okoles. The Okoles are as expensive as the the TRDs but are put together much better.

I got the husky floor mats. I had them in the XJ and really liked them. I walk the dog every morning before work in the fields around Gilroy( a little 4 pawin action) The dog likes to get off the pavement and play in the dirt. The huskies have always been able to keep the mess contained, whether it is the summer dust or the winter muck, so I am quite happy with them.

In the Taco, there is a minor coverage issue, but I think a little motivation and a hair dryer could probably fix that.

The cool thing about the husky rear is that it covers the hump, so I have my harness coming from the Radio body underneath the mat and then into the console.

I got my Husky floormats from AutoAnything (http://www.autoanything.com/products/product_fm.aspx?p_id=1456&se=husky_liners_floor_mats), but the huskies are available all over the place. I think that I have even seen them on eBay.

I'd be up for a CAKE*. I actually work in Milpitas, so I am up in the Valley everyday for work. I believe that this week(Wednesday) we are going to have an XJ lunch(although very few of us have xjs anymore) in Alviso.

Always lookin for people to go adventuring with, especially as my New Years resolution is to get up in the hills more often!

Let me know if you can make Wednesday, I'll send you more info.

Some of the best money I have spent on keeping the inside clean and not worrying about mud - I have had a set from my 2000 tacoma and transfered those to the 04 - 6 years later still like new :)

An other 06 Taco Double Cab checking in! (As soon as the system lets me, I will change my sig) She is a radiant red, is a 6 speed manual w/TRD package, 8 days and 623 miles old, and bone stock for now. She is my daily driver and main transportation for the family, but I have about the same plans for her as you have for your vehicles (I guess that's why we are hanging out at this forum ;) )
First mod will most likely be a camper shell with some smart interior (with bajataco for inspiration), then some rock sliders, maybe some slightly larger shoes (I really don't want to do anything that hurts fuel milage too much), some auxiliary fuel tank etc, etc.
This will be fun :D

Hi, Michael. Glad you're here!

One bit of advice about choosing a shell: Pick one with win-doors, or side windows that also open upward to allow access to the bed from the sides. I wish my SnugTop SuperSport had them, but I found out too late that I could not have it converted. Whichever shell you choose, I would seriously consider windoors a requirement! ARE or SnugTop can accomodate them if you pick the right model or check the right box on the order form.

Can anyone recommend a good shop in the San Francisco east bay area that does suspension lifts etcetera? I am willing to travel to another city if necessary for someone that does good work. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I currently have a 1993 Toyota 4x4 extra cab v6 pickup. However, I am close to buying a 2006 Tacoma Double cab. I like the tier size, suspension/lift size, and rock rails on the Expeditions West truck.

Also, is there a front locker available for the 2006?

The only place that I found(South Bay) that would do my lift is a place called Ben Lifted(?) in Santa Cruz. I did it myself. Much easier than the Cherokee. Most places I called will not do lifts unless it is a full package from a known Manufacturer for liability reasons.

AJ at Bentup is close to Sacramento, he should be able to suggest a place if he won't.

I believe that ARB does have a front locker. Could come in handy!:)

Dittio,

I have the xvision, and my tool box is up in front so that the dog can hang in the bed when she is a mess. On my last trip, my tow strap was a little hard to reach, and I depended on my wingman to get the towstrap and tree strap out(plus the rear of the truck was in the muck, I really did not want to walk through that to get to it).

Another solution that I am looking into is Velcro ties. I want to velcro tie my tow strap into an easily accessible location along with a few other things.

maybe some slightly larger shoes (I really don't want to do anything that hurts fuel milage too much)

With 6k miles on my Taco I put 265/75R16 Revos on mine(without the lift). Made the speedo spot on and no rubbing whatsoever.

Uncle Chris. I like the look of the 265/75 revos on your tacoma. How are they working out? How many miles? No rubbing at all, even with the mudflaps? I have a 2006 white doublecab and am thinking over suspension/tire options. How have you found the stock suspension off road? Are you considering upgrading? I have been keeping an eye on the OME setup to be released shortly. 2" seems to be sufficient to improve travel and still keep gas mileage and drivability comfortable, the cost seems right as well.

Interesting that everybody seams to agree on the win-doors. I don't really plan on sleeping in the back of the Taco as the bed is about a foot short for me ;) but I will have a look at them. It would be long enough for the boys though, at least for the next week or so if I stop feeding the older one :Wow1:

Another thing I have to decide on before jumping on getting a top is if I plan on leaving my Maggiolina roof top tent on the trailer (did this mainly for fuel efficiency reason as the tent sucked about 1.5 mpg out of my Grand Cherokee; the Jeep was my daily driver as the TAco will be) or if I plan to put it back on the vehicle; in that case, I'd better get a rack like some of you do. I don't believe these fibre glass tops would be strong enough to carry the Maggiolina over rough terrain (and two loving adults at night).

Thanks Snowbrock,

I have about 17k mile on the Revos and they are an awesome all around tire.

The Revos did not rub the mudflaps at all. I took the mudflaps off after a snow run in January. The snow had broken one of them at the seam, so I thought I would finish the job on them. I have done my best to stuff the Revos, and I did not find that the mudflaps would interfere.

I did find out today that the Revos do rub slightly on the UCA. I have never noticed it until I was cleaning out the front suspension(getting the mud chunks out). I was measuring the UCA clearance out of curiosity to see If I am going to have more UCA clearance with the Camburgs. At flex, the Revos are wearing the paint off of the UCA. It is not obvious in the driveway, but the worn paint says it all.

I was very happy with the stock suspension offroad. What I didn't like was approach/departure angles and wanted to put a winch on(glad I did!).

Once I put the ARB + Warn 9000i on, the front dropped ~ 1 inch +. At that point I put on some DR Coilovers and a Wheeler's AAL. I am running about an inch lift (Stock 35" front/37" rear flare to ground, I am running 36.25" front, 38" rear). When I get a full leaf pack for the rear, hopin' to get that to 2", which is enough.

I did a lot of wheeling with my XJ at 1.5" lift. When I put it up to 4-4.5" (TeraFlex budget+OME HD)it was too much for long distance trips and commuting. In retrospect, I should have taken off the 1.5" spacer/shackle lift on the XJ and went with a pure OME. I liked the OME a lot.

I want to keep long range drivability in the taco and I am not a rock crawler, so 2 " should be enough for me. I am really impressed with what the taco can do stock.

The only reason I did not wait for the OME was the winch+bumper. I sprung for the Hoes, so that I could adjust the ride height without ripping apart the front end.

I am putting on the Camburg arms next week and am trying to figure out my pure offroad wheel/tire setup.

Next project is dedicated offroad wheels/tires,which I can eval once I get the arms on. I got a stock steelie off of ebay and will be trying out a AR23(4.5bs). I figure there are a bunch of used tire places around here, I'll pick up a used 255/85 and go to my favorite rut at Hollister and try to make em rub. If they do rub, I will be perfectly happy with the 32s(265/75).

That way I can use the truck for long distance travel and have the Off Roads for more technical trails.

Hope that answers your questions, glad to be of help!

05TacoDoc, sorry for HiJacking your thread.

Yes 05tacodoc, sorry, I figure that this is all 05+ expedition stuff, though. Unclechris, sorry about all of the questions. You mentioned the winch bumper, did you go with the ARB bumper? And you talked about replacing the UCAs? Because the 265/75 are rubbing them? Is it due to the lift? Also you talked about rear springs, which ones are you looking at, Deaver, OME? How did mileage change with the tires/ with the lift? So do you eventually want 2 sets of wheels (265/75 and 255/85)? Keep us posted on the wheel fitment experiments. Thank you.

No problem, keep the questions coming.

I got the ARB and put a warn 9000' with 125' of synth rope.

I am replacing the UCAs because the front end feels a little bit loose. With the 05 tacos, if you lift 3" you will lose the adjustability of the caster, tending towards looser feel to the steering. It could be that I am over-sensitive.

The rubbing is completely unnoticeable from the cab, and I think it only happens with the suspension compressed.

The 265/75s did not change my fuel mileage, or at least it was unnoticeable, on my commute with nolift+ stock bumper+ shell I was getting 18, that was in Silicon Valley commute traffic though.

With the ARB+lift I am currently getting around 15 mpg, 16 with bumper + no lift.

For rears, I need to get a custom spring pack. I have been considering the OME HDs that I talked to Jim at ARB about last fall.

The Deavers for the 05 will not work for me, I have too much weight with the shell and all of my adventure equipment in the back. I am thinking of going with a custom Deaver(or Alcan) pack.

Hey, It's good to know about more stuff coming out for the 05+ tacoma. I love to show mine off, I plan on getting a front bumper to mount a winch to, but I also saw a portable winch, so maybe a proper rear bumper could allow it to work on either side. Here are the pics that finally uploaded on TS (they moved the thread to q&c):

That's cool that you want to build a baja ready truck. I'd like to do the same eventually but it will take a bit more money, time, etc. Maybe we could start a military team or get the Marine corps or Army to sponsor a vehicle. They have circle track racers but I haven't seen much on the offroad team which would seem more pertinent to me, especially in the desert arena.

By the way, that's a PKM, not an RPK. RPKs are magazine fed.

Got any pics?

05TACODOC,

How is your 05 Going? Any mods? Anymore pics?

Well, at 26,000 my stock BFG's are almost shot... :jump:
So, it's time for some new shoes and since I'm doing that I'll be "forced" to finally buy my lift :victory:

I've saved up for the DR CO's and Deavers ($1650 from Demello), now I am deliberating my tire choices. I am keeping the stock rims and am considering 265/75R16 BFG AT or MT's... decisions decisions...

I wonder if that 10 leaf pack Deaver setup will stand up to a shell and all my gear??? Or do I need a 12 leaf???

What do you guys think?

Everyone I have talked to suggested a Deaver custom set. The normal Deaver pack only gives you 1.5", and after a shell and a bunch o'stuff in the back you can decrease that.

My AALs are starting to squeak, so I am debating about whether it is time for custom leaf pack. If so then I can probably set it up for 33's and get rid of the pre-runner(headlights in the air) look.

The problem is that the 05s have reverse shackles, that is the spring is above the body mount in the rear.

With the XJ(and with previous Tacos) I could get lift by putting a longer shackle on, that is not possible with the 05+ Tacoma. Here is a picture of a guys Taco from TTORA. He has a custom bumper that gives a clear view of the leafs.

I think that when Toyota designed the 05, they tried to make it as proprietary as possible. Look at the wheel fitment issues for example.

(BTW, this guy has a really cool bumper!!!!)

Yeah that makes sense, so the custom leafs would have to just have more arch, I'm sure there are limiting factors to that as well, maybe if you cut the reverse shackles and welded on some non-reverse ones spaced farther apart.

at first thought that makes sense, but you would have to do a lot of fab'ing as the mounts are currently supported from the bottom. I am not sure what geometry issues you would run into(for a straight axle, probably minimal), but for a guy with a welder it could be done.

Finally scraped the money together and today I placed my order with Demello for the stage 2 kit :hehe:
Donahoe CO's in the front, and I special ordered 12 leaf Deavers for the rear (so I can carry supplies and friends). I just have to wait a little longer than usual for the Deavers, the spring steel is on backorder. The kit also comes with Bilstein 5100's for the rear :jump: :jump:

I'm going with some BFG MT's in 255/85R16 as well so this should be a well rounded setup.

FYI for those who are considering a setup like this.

No, but he was saying that he has installed and dealt with ALL the major suppliers and IHO the DR's lasted longer, and handled better with that load than brand "X".
He also stated that when and if you do have a problem that DR will actually honor the warranty and follow up with the customer(old school customer service, no playing games), as opposed to the "door slam guarantee" (we have your money so go away) attitude that he's seen with other makers...

That's kind of funny.

I got a set of the 05 DC sliders from Jason when he first brought them out.

First they kept getting delayed(a few weeks, but kept getting told they will be there in a few days).

Then they came without the proper mounting hardware. I called him and of course I got the "How can that be?I personally inspect everything that leaves the shop". He gave me a choice of waiting for him to ship the mounting plates or pic some up at Home Depot. Since I wanted to get these on my truck I opted for the Home Depot choice. He said he would send me a TShirt.

So I got the sliders on and realized that the Powdercoat job was horrible. So I called him up and of course I got the "How can that be?I personally inspect everything that leaves the shop" and got the Home Depot bit again. Gave him a chance, got the touch up paint and guess what, it still looked terrible.

At that point he stopped responding to my PMs from TTORA and never returned my calls. I checked into a local pcoater to see what it would cost to get them redone. They explained exactly what is going on with the bad PCoat job. Cheap and very substandard. I really didn't want to go through the hassle of sending them back, so I dropped it.

To top it all off, they are about 2 inches off, and I cannot remount them in the correct location due to frame interference.

My rant, My experience, My choice to drop it. I know a lot of people think very highly of Demello and his products, but my experience is completely different.

That's why I think the "door slam guarantee" is funny.

I'm going to go with the stubbs welding sliders, much cheaper and I've heard good stuff about them. I think first I'll go with the all pro rear wrap around bumper which comes with fiberglass unlike the demello's. I don't have anything against jason at demello as I've never bought anything from them and I've heard more good than bad. I got suspension from wheelers 3 different times and had unsurpassable customer service each time. They seem to ship everything out immediately and it always arrives within a couple of days. My shocks had the wrong bushings from donahoe and jason at wheelers had donahoe ship the correct ones directly to me.

Just picked up a 255/85 TrXus MT today to do a test fit on the Taco.

I got a second set of the stock wheels off of ebay(the guy had them listed as alloys, not as wheels or rims, so I was the only bidder). I had tried an AR23, but the brake caliper would not clear.

The full leaf packs came from from AllProOffRoad last week and I am just waiting on the u-bolts. and they should be going on over the weekend along with the UCAs. It should give me about 2", which is right where I want to be.

I was looking at the brake lines. I am wondering if those need to be modified(anyone?) Right now I am sticking with the stock shocks, which should protect the brake lines(shocks as bumpstops) until I figure out whether a solution is needed. Long term plan is to go with Hoes in the rear as well, but they are a bit $$$$.

After the rear leafs go on and the Hoes are adjusted to level the truck, a trip to Hollister is in order. I'll find my favorite rut and try to stuff the 255, looking for rubbin. If that is successful, I am going to 255s and keeping the Revos mounted for pavement/mild offroad trips.

Will keep you posted.

What a great success! Everything I have done to the truck so far worked great on the trail. Sections of this run are "medium" according to the trail leader "DennisDawg", Forest Service rated it at "most difficult". Definately alot of rocks, off camber climbs and some of the coolest wheeling I've done yet!!!

Thanks Scott. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone! :jumping:

A note on my BFG MT 255/85R16's - With the front flaps on I had serious rub so I took them off and trimmed the bottom inside corner of the fender flare about 1 inch. I had NO RUB in the wheelwells on my last trail run, and I was stuffin' them all day!
One issue that I have to address is a a slight rub on my UCA at full lock in reverse, it only happens on one side when it happens (alternates depending on direction of turn). Jason Demello says its the backspacing on my stock rims and suggested a 1 inch wheel spacer from Spidertrax as a remedy.

Now that I have these basic mods nailed down, my next phase of this project should be electrical.
My wiring is clean and solid, but I've added about all I can without expanding I think. Dual batts and some type of junction where I can run all accessories to (with room for expansion) is needed.
Right now I have one battery with these additional non-OEM systems: Kenwood 1000w amp, Hella air horns, IPF's, Warn, aux 55w back up lights. I still need to eventually add a CB and GPS and I dont like multiple wires running to each post on one battery...

Since I dont know of anyone with a dual setup in an 05, any sage advice from the old timers here???

What are your plans for the bed? Maybe you could integrate the second battery there?

asteffes
07-05-2006, 01:55 AM
If you're not yet ready for a second battery system, just run some 8 or 6 gauge cable to a distribution block. Fuse that line with a 40 amp circuit breaker. The dist block should have several terminals each with its own fuse of appropriate amperage. Wire all those smaller loads to the block. Run the winch directly to the battery, of course. That should help clean up your wiring nicely while providing enough power to run the loads you would conceivably run simultaneously. You probably wouldn't (and shouldn't) crank your 1kW stereo and the winch at the same time, but you might run the IPF lights and CB simultaneously while winching out of trouble.

I mounted a West Marine dist block in the rear storage area of my '06 to connect my GPS and Kenwood TM-V700. It worked out well.

I have long range plans that mimick your 04 bed setup actually, but I'm waiting to win the lottery

I could put a second battery in a toolbox back there but I'd much rather have it cleanly tucked under the hood thus saving all of my precious space back there for supplies and gear.

One part of a buildup that never gets much attention is all the little stuff that you will need to have a safe trip in the back country. Recovery gear, airing down, airing up, and flat tire repair were at the top of my list as I have seen all of these items save the day when 'wheeling with friends.

Here is what I have come up with so far for "Off Roading Essentials": Hi-Lift, Block, shackle and two straps (20" and 30"), receiver shackle, Staun Deflators, A good tire gauge, Tire repair kit (plugs), and an Air pump.
Also, common sense items like duct tape, tools, shovel, trash bags, WATER, MRE's, first aid, clothing/blanket, CB/2M radio, gloves, etc.

Here is my Kit so far:

Doc,
How much did you lift the truck after installing the Donahoe coilovers? I'm warming up to the 255-85-16 MTs but don't want to lift the suspension a lot to accomodate them. I wouldn't mind an inch, but don't want to go up to the 3" lift that the Toytec users get, as I don't imagine that's too healthy for the CVs, nor do I want a tall truck running around on skinny tires for everyday driving.

I have them set at 2.5, I like the increased clearance. CV issues were on the pre-04 Tacos, front end design is different on ours so CV's are not an issue even at 3.0 acording to Demello.

I don't think we are ever going to see a decent bumper with tire carrier for less than $1k.

I wonder if Scott ever got anymore information from that company out of Israel - I think they are called Asfir. They had some decent products at really good prices that they were set to import into North America. Don't know if it ever happened...

Since I have the square sliders and the ARB plate bumper, I'm thinking that tubes out back wouldnt look too good. IMO tubes arent as strong as square. I need something back there that is plate/square with side protection, good departure, and a provision for towing.

Hello Everyone,

I just purchsed an 06 Taco about a month ago. I am looking forwards to 'eventually' getting my truck up to par, but with my budget it is going to take awhile. Besides the indoctrination fee for a new Tacoma is pretty steep and takes a while to recover from :)

Reading through the threads let me know that I am in great company!!! I am also a veteran (A co. 1/75 RGRs, '90-'97), so I am really looking forward to seeing who I will get to meet though this.

I went with weld on for strength and anti-theft.
The only drawback IMO is maintenance (paint) would be easier with bolt on BUT my sliders have saved me many times now so the weld on method is super stout.

Make sure you get them gusseted where the plates attach to the frame if you get weld on's.

Doc, I must say your truck is one of the sickest 05's I've seen. Very nice, I love everything you've done. I'm building mine up slow but sure. As the money comes in type thing. I have the D-hoes and the Deaver 10's matched with some Firm OME shocks in the rear. I'm thinking of swapping out the Deavers though for the new Dakar leafs from ARB or maybe a 12 or 13 leaf set from Deaver. You have the 12 right? Do you like? I like the idea of added payload though so I'm leaning towards the Dakars, as is with 26 gallons of water sloshing around in my bed (water tank) along with all my camping gear my Deavers squat down quite a bit. I have a pair of Demello sliders also. For tires I'm currently running BFG A/T's in the 265/75 16 but am thinking of going with a 255/85 16 Cooper ST (not SST) or a 285/75 16 Dick Cepek F-C II. Both are made by Cooper either way. It's tough though because the BFG's have been great, but I like to try new things. Right now I'm leaning towards the 285 DC F-C II only because of the conditions I run into in the winter. Logging roads in the winter can be difficult to traverse when the snow gets real deep, so floating over the snow may be a better option then digging down into it. The guys at Arctic trucks in Iceland use the Dick Cepek tires, so if it's good enough for them in snow... My truck also see's the road quite a bit as it is my daily driver so max traction tires are not my best option. Right now, I'm saving, camping gear drained me this summer. Coleman Stove, Engel fridge (big $$$), potable water tank and pump. I'd love a roof top style tent for the bed of my truck as well, I just need to strengthen the cross bars I'm using in the bed, maybe add a support in the middle to hold the weight better, we'll see. Anyway I'm rambling, it's good to see 05's being built for long distance adventures. I don't know if you guys have seen these but here are a few pics of 05's built for a different kind of expedition then we are use too. Cheers.

Thanks Lost Canadian!
Wow, those are some wide fender flares on that arctic Tacoma! :yikes: I barely squeak through some trails as it is now.
The 12 leafs are great because I can load up and head out without sagging... and wheel to my camp spot without dragging ;) 10 leafs too soft IMO for what I do. If I were up north again I'd go with an AT tire but with the rocky terrain down here I like the grab and toughness of the BFG MT.

Nice ride 05TACO!
I can relate to barely squeaking by, having nearly lost a rear flare a time or two due to the relative closeness of trees. The new Tacomas are so close to the same size as the Tundra, I'm sure they're just as much fun to get through some tight spots.
As far as the artic Tacomas...:Wow1: They are cool!; but seeing snow like that makes me want to put a fire in the fireplace and open up a nice bottle of Reisling.

I considered (and prefer) Scotts low profile bed setup but due to space constraints I need to mount higher. So...
Looking for a rack to mount an Eazi-Awn tent over my bed like this:

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g230/devildoc25/100_0597.jpg

Thanks to Mark for the idea. He has a CanBack, they dont make one for my 05... so I'm looking for an alternative. Anybody have a ladder rack or anything similar for an 05 Tacoma??? I just need a simple rack so I can mount the tent and still use my bed and retain my toolbox for overland. I like how he has his boards up there as well, I could put a kayak up there.

Anyone in SD or OC know of any fab shops that could knock this out before the Trophy for a reasonable amount?

Anyone???

Dave,

You should be able to obtain a "lumber rack" at any camper shell place. The new Taco has been out long enough now, they should have them. The lumber rack would give you the ability to hold a tent. Or I know Yakima makes these rack type deals that mount on trucks.

I am pretty sure Chuck has a Kargomaster on his Taco (not new like yours).

Here is a place that sells Kargomaster, although a little ways from Oceanside...
Custom Road Truckers Toy
9424 Jamacha Road
619-697-3441

I personally have not done business with them. But, I know friends who have.

www.kargomaster.com
www.yakima.com

Also pickup a Truck or Parts Trader. It would be a good place to start to find other dealers, etc.

Also, Mark had soft racks on top of his Eze Awn. These held the surfboards.

Oh, (sorry ADD), Desertdude had a rack custom made for his Taco and roof-top tent. But, I know it started to crack a little during our Baja trip. I would PM him and see if he has any suggestions from his experience.

Dave,
Go custom. Think outside the box. Call some of the off-road shops in town and ask who is doing fab work. Then start dreaming of all the cool add-ons you will need. Just a note from my custom racks I try to use cross bar material that is the same diameter as Yakima. This way you can add bikes, kayaks, space cases, and surfboards. Don't forget to think about awnings, Hi-lift jack location, and the list goes on. Here is a photograph of a friends Hummer that had a custom rack built. Maybe something like this with a low profile tent where the tire is. Next to the tire are locations for extra jerry cans. Also you can see the Hi-lift.
http://24.248.84.138/hummers/jan_2004_box_canyon/lee_maiseldata/IMGP0639.jpg

Oh ya when you find a good fab shop let me know I will need some work done soon!

I also say go all custom. Think about what you want to get out of it and what kind of cool things you can do with it. I wouldn't rush it, take time to brain storm. When you go camping take notes because that's when you'll figure out what kind of rack design/accessories would work the best.

Maybe you could save some money by buying a prefabbed lumber rack then customizing itself by adding light tabs, tie down points, etc.

Who ever you have build it, have a detailed drawing of how you want. It's just reassurance that it'll be built how YOU want it.

Early on, I had an idea to run the top of the tent just at the roof line, which would keep the COG low and allow more storage. You could even enclose it with these for quick access storage and a semi-sealed bed area.

Like these: http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_200091674_200091674

The top photo is an option that I almost went with when I was thinking of a roof top tent. The price is very resonable and they offer horizontal bars to tie the front and rear pieces together. You can use it with the softtopper or without. I decided I did not want to mount a tent that high, and I ran out of money, so I just built a platform for my double tent cot. It's kind of ghetto compared to a real roof top tent but it works for me.

You might make it all 5 days without running the battery flat, since you will be driving the truck around quite a lot. But it won't be very nice to your starting battery if you are parked for a long period and run it down pretty low. (it will probably be upper 80's to 90 for daytime highs) On the upside, there will be plenty of us to give you a jumpstart should you need one.

:iagree:

Dave-

For mounting to avoid the clutter look into adding a female lighter socket. You can pick them up at VatoZone or Checkers (Shuck's) similar to this:
http://www.partsamerica.com/product_images//img/csm/10722.jpg

This will avoid the long distance reach to the front Aux port. You may also want to buy a Magic Bullet Blender... LOL. (BTW do you have the OEM standard 110 plugs in the bed?)

As for mounting add a good piece of wood and some sort of cushion to it (read Carpet) and use turn buckles to mount it. You can install the handles upside down if you are limited on length for the turn buckles. Use metal straps to connect the wood to the stock seat locations and remember to prepare for an accident. With it mounted in the rear, you do not want a fridge being smashed into your back... With that in mind keep everything HD for the mounting. If Remember your truck you should just be able to remove the lower portion of the seat and leave the back on (you had lots of stuff back there IIRC). Or start making a self!

Here are some pics of my CB install in progress :D
The center console in the new Tacoma is cake to work on.

The mic is coming out of the bottom edge of the console, I will store it in the dash cubby when not in use (for now). I like this CB because the mic is the only visible part - keeps things up front uncluttered. I had the Midland 2 in 1 cb until now, it was a good cb... but the 12v cig lighter plug and exposed coax drove me nuts! Power for the Cobra is going to come from the cig lighter under the dash.
http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g230/devildoc25/COBRA/100_0699.jpg

The connection box is hidden away inside the console. The panel just pops off the back of the console. The antenna comes in through the back wall to here, this box is also connected to the mic, and power.

And on a completely different subject, I thought I'd show of my Kenwood KAC-7202 amp and Image Dynamics IDQ10 v.2 D2 Sub install. The best part of this is I made the amp rack and sub enclosure myself, and I did the whole install solo. Gotta have my music wherever I roam! This sits tucked away behind my Engel... I am very impressed by my buying experience and I highly recommend them!

Here is the bottom portion of my passenger side back seat removed to expose what I'm dealing with for a mounting surface. I will be fabricating metal brackets that will utilize the existing seat and seat belt bolts. These brackets will support the deck that the Engel will sit on. I want it to stay put in case things get out of hand so the stock bolts/steel brackets should be plenty strong in conjunction with the Transit Lock. This arrangement also leaves one side of the back seat intact for Junior Explorers.
http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g230/devildoc25/ENGEL/100_0700.jpg

Here is the early fitting of the deck.
http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g230/devildoc25/ENGEL/100_0695.jpg

There will be head room for the copilot to open and access the fridge while we are moving. Once the metal brackets are fabbed and bolted in, I will bolt the deck surface to the brackets. Then I will bolt the Engel Transit Lock to the deck and it will be super safe and secure. I am purposely overbuilding the deck and mounting system so I wont worry about it when off road or in case of collision. Power for the unit will come from the distribution block I wired months ago for the Kenwood amp.

I don't know if you've seen this. There is a great mod to change the direction your fridge will open, especially important if you have few precious inches of head room to spare the lid opening on the long axis. You do have to modify the transit bag though.

Well, after much thinking, measuring, and just plain old fashioned American ingenuity, I have my Engel installed finally, just in time for the Trophy...

Unfortunately for me, but good for the rest of the 05 and up crowd, it seems most EVERY modification I have done on this truck is a pioneering effort... But, what fun is it to have everything bought off the shelf and engineer nothing for yourself???

I ended up going with two hand-made brackets instead of four, this should be plenty strong enough. Factory mounting locations are used to ensure safety, and also maintain the option of reversing this mod back to stock if necessary.

I added the Transit Lock from Sierra Expeditions for easy in and out with the fridge.

i really dig that fridge :D...great job with the clean install! im hoping one of these days i'll get to see some of y'alls builds in person.

an aftermarket, uniball style upper control arm will eliminate your rub on the stock uca in reverse. ifs systems experience a change in the control arm angle when moving forward or reverse, it's just "the way it is". the wheels track outward due to toe angle in reverse, and inward when moving forward. inward means the control arms must drop, extending the suspension, outward means the control arms will try to go horizontal, compressing the suspension. the uniball uppers have a tighter side profile than the stock upper control arms, it's worth spending the 400 bucks on a set of camburgs than running a wheel adapter...the former strengthens your setup, the latter introduces complexity, a wider scrub radius, and more of a lever on the unit bearing. if you compress your suspension all the way and turn the wheels, your tires will rub. if you want to dial it right, take the coilovers out, put both front wheels on cardboard with some sand under it, and turn the wheels side to side with the lower control arm sitting on the bumpstop. youll see all the areas you need to trim or move the wheel well. once youre done, you can ditch the lift and have a large tire with a low c/g :D...or keep the lift and have a well-adjusted travel ratio using a longer shaft and a uniball upper control arm.

jason & co did a beautiful job on that rear bumper with the tire carrier, and the all-pro unit also looks really good. if any of you are considering a rear bumper, decide what you want it to do and what parts of the stock truck you want to keep. imho the demello unit is better suited for pounding around offroad with a bunch of stuff in the bed and unknown roads ahead--the allpro is a bolt-on unit exchanging clearance for stock sheetmetal protection. the demello unit replaces stock sheetmetal with formed grind protection at the corners, requires a cut at the back to maximize clearance, and can be drug in the dirt or bounced off the rocks as needed. there's nothing wrong with the allpro, it's just lighter duty than the demello unit. the demello is also properly linked to the frame at the forward edge of the quarterpanel protection...i cant tell from the pic if the allpro is designed the same way, but it needs to be, and if it isn't, dont buy it.

it's actually not hard to design and make the cuts for a custom bumper. the hard part is finding someone who's willing to work with you on the welds. ask around at the local community college, sometimes the instructors will work on the side for a fair rate and teach you something in the process. if you have someone do all the work, it's actually the iterative fitment/cut/weld/grind/repeat process that kills the wallet...i experienced this recently when i was on a schedule and wound up in the hospital, my rear bumper went from costing under 200 bucks to "a lot" because i had to have someone else finish the project. if you show up with a reasonable plan, any small fab shop will be willing to help you out...all you need is a sawzall, angle grinder, and hacksaw...they weld, you do the rest. scrap yards are the best place to find material...my rear bumper, part of the sliders, and the mods to the arb in the front are cheap scrap. its very easy to improve on the stock rear bumper, it just takes some time, and that first cut in the quarterpanel is...not easy :D.

round tube is stronger than box tube...again, thats just "the way it is". it just happens to be a lot easier to stand on box tube :D...also much easier to make cuts, gussets and other stuff, and attach to the frame if youre using box tube.

here (http://www.tundrasolutions.com/photopost/showphoto.php/photo/34134/cat/500/ppuser/5505) are the frame attachments and supports we made for the main 2"x4" deck of my rear bumper...very little material beyond the stock supports, and fully boxed and sleeved. here (http://www.tundrasolutions.com/photopost/showphoto.php/photo/34135/cat/500/ppuser/5505) is another view...my gallery there actually has a lot of photos from the various projects of late...rear bumper shots, rear fiberglass chop and fitment, and wheel well tubbing. the rear bumper still isnt finished, which is the other downside to doing it yourself if you dont yet own a welder.

if the rear of the new taco was similar in size to a tundra i'd send you the notes for how everything was measured and assembled, and why. it might provide some ideas for your own truck, if you choose the diy route.

I had a blast meeting everyone at the Trophy. What a nice group of people, and Arizona was very beautiful.

Unfortunately my bid for the Trophy ended early friday morning during the sand course. I flogged the truck mercilessly through the course finishing in 1:10, but the jump at the end got me... I broke my rear ring and pinion upon landing. Evidently alot of early production 05's have had this problem and it finally got me.

So, with dashed hopes and much humility, we said our goodbyes and limped a few miles out to the pavement in 4HI to get a tow, listening to the steady, rythmic clunk from my crippled differential. Fortunately for us I had 35,300 miles on the odometer... and I cant say enough good things about the dealership there in Peoria, Larry Miller Toyota. They didnt even ask me if I had been off roading despite the giant TTORA sticker, Arizona pinstriping, mods, and expedition laden vehicle. I was covered under warranty no questions asked. Toyota's warranty is good in my book. So we rented a car (covered under said warranty) and drove home, the parts will be in wednesday and I'll drive or fly back out and bring home my truck thursday or friday.

So begins the planning for next years Trophy. I'll be back...

I broke my rear ring and pinion upon landing. Evidently alot of early production 05's have had this problem and it finally got me.:sombrero: together, that is a great pair of sentences right there. i can hear the toyota representative now..."well sir, we've found many owners of your production run have carnaged their rear differentials upon landing." i mean...how cool would that be :D...

seriously now, i noticed your misfortune mentioned elsewhere on the forums (maybe the trophy thread?), really sorry to hear about it...breaking a critical component at the beginning of a trip is a real letdown. good to hear it worked out and you were able to get home safe, and good on toyota to replace it under warranty.

I got this Engel hinge lock from Sierra Expeditions and it has proved to be a great accessory. It prevents the lid from coming off the hinge unexpectedly (usually when I was in a hurry) and still allows for removal when cleaning of the interior becomes neccessary.

Here you can see the lock, just push the thumb tab for lid removal.

I'm considering mounting it here by my Engel. There is about 3 inches of free airspace for the Engel behind the coffe maker.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g230/devildoc25/100_0922.jpg

To make coffee I would need to flip up the back seat bottom, then flip down the plate and put in the coffee jug. Then just add water and my favorite coffee.

I acquired this cool Ezy-Move for my Engel MT-45, courtesy of Sierra Expeditions.
The Ezy-Move is made by Two Zone, Australia.

http://www.sierraexpeditions.com/index.htm

Total install time was 5 minutes
Tools required: 1 phillips screwdriver.
Difficulty of install on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being way too hard), this was only a 1...

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g230/devildoc25/100_0895.jpg

Step 1: Expose the bottom rear edge of the Engel.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g230/devildoc25/100_0899.jpg

Step 2: Remove corner protectors. They are not needed once the Ezy-Move is installed so I put them away in my toolbox. The screws are used to attach the Ezy-Move later on.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g230/devildoc25/100_0907.jpg

Step 3: Slip the Ezy-Move in place. It is a perfect fit.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g230/devildoc25/100_0909.jpg

Step 4: Attach the Ezy-Move using the screws removed during Step 2. Do not overtighten!

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g230/devildoc25/100_0911.jpg

Step 5: Admire your work!

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g230/devildoc25/100_0912.jpg

The Ezy-Move turns your Engel into a rollable, mobile unit.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g230/devildoc25/100_0916.jpg

Due to it's elongated roller design, the Ezy-Move handles most any surface with ease.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g230/devildoc25/100_0915.jpg

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g230/devildoc25/100_0913.jpg

The Ezy-Move slides in easily now and interfaces perfectly with my Engel Transit Lock.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g230/devildoc25/100_0921.jpg

My overall impression of the Ezy-Move is very positive.
Now, when loaded down with goodies, it can be easily rolled out to the truck for loading, and rolled back in at journey's end. Adding the Ezy-Move to an Engel transforms it from a two-handle carry to a rolling fridge.
The rollers are a Delrin type material and should last for years, this is a heavy duty accessory made for Expedition use.

And, considering the fact that a fully loaded Engel MT-45 can easily exceed 100 lbs when loaded up with goodies, this accessory is a real back saver and a must have!!!

I removed my swaybar for increased IFS articulation off road. I have noticed a tiny, tiny increase in body roll on road, no problem if you just slow down. Off road it has gained a noticeable travel = better traction.
I also lost about 50lbs up front by losing the bar.

Tools Required: WD-40, Metric wrenches, Allen wrench set, Vise-Grips, rubber hammer, jack, and jackstands. Also, a 10mm socket and ratchet are used to remove the skidplate once you're ready to lower the swaybar out.

Difficulty: 3 on a scale of 1 to 10. This requires some muscle (or air if you have it) and about 30 minutes.

Step 1: Loosen lug nuts, jack up truck, place jackstands and lower vehicle onto jackstands for safety. Remove front wheels.

Step 2: Spray bolts liberally with WD-40. Place wrenches as you see here (for leverage) and place allen wrench, using the vise-grips to keep the allen wrench from spinning.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g230/devildoc25/100_0805.jpg

Step 3: Hold the allen wrench still, turn the wrench and remove the nut completely.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g230/devildoc25/100_0806.jpg

Step 4: Smack the exposed bolt out using a rubber hammer.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g230/devildoc25/100_0807.jpg

Step 5: Remove the 4 bushing bolts (not shown), remove the four 10mm skidplate bolts and the skidplate, then work the disconnected swaybar out. Be careful not to rip a CV boot with the ends of the bar as you work it out.

Step 6: Reassemble and enjoy increased IFS articulation! :smiley_drive:

Thank God, hopefully it will give us poor boys a chance to catch up with mods of our own.:p JK. But on a serious note you've done a very nice job with your truck mimicking some of Scotts ideas and adapting it to an 05.

I'm going in a little different direction with a low mounted Hannibal tent myself, only because I've actually seen a few of them in action and really liked what I saw. For some reason they seem to be a more popular choice up here in Canada as well. Probably because getting an Eezi-Awn shipped in costs a ton, and Hannibal actually has dealers located here. Both are great either way.

So I take it after the rack and tent this thread is going to get quiet for awhile? Perhaps not? What about a custom aux fuel and water setups, or are your just going to jerry can it? Anyway it's been great watching your rapid build up but I'm still looking forward to the rack and tent setup. :clapsmile

I slept in it already, took me a nap right there in the driveway (imagining I was somewhere south of San Felipe, enroute to Cabo). Today I will let it air out, it smells too new!

Here it is sitting in my driveway. Setup takes only a couple of minutes, unlike my old ground tent. This thing is heavy duty, Mil-Spec construction all around. The Strand mattress is actually pretty comfortable too.

http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g230/devildoc25/100_0961.jpg

Here are some racks I'm using for inspiration

Brittan's rack keeps the tent low, I like this "tucked" style.
http://homepage.mac.com/brittansmith/PhotoAlbum17.html

This is Pasquale's setup. I like the way his rack and entire bed are tied together for maximum useability. My bed configuration will end up similar to this.
http://homepage.mac.com/desertdude/PhotoAlbum133.html

Here is Mark's setup, using a CanBack as the foundation for his Eezi-Awn.
http://www.expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=941&page=7

The tricky part for me is tying in the rack to the composite bed. More than likely will have it tie in the the bed bolts/frame.

Any suggestions?

snowbrock
11-27-2006, 06:14 PM
I have been thinking of building a bed platform for my 06 similar to scott's. I wanted to build it flush with the top of the bed and make it out of metal like he did to keep rain, dust and thieves from the stuff inside. My concept consists of an aluminum-skinned frame made out of angle iron. The l-shaped angle iron would sit partly on the on the top and the other side could be attached to the rails using bolts and hardware. You would have to crawl inside to undo to bolts in order to get it off and you would have to install a lock in the tailgate to keep things secure, but I think you could easily make it tough enough to handle the weight of the eezi awn. I don't think the rails are tough enough, but the angle iron would put the weight on the top- not on the rails themselves.

Scott Brady
11-27-2006, 06:25 PM
Good idea, and you could have tabs come down from the frame to bolt to the load channels.

My cover is a little overkill for just the tent. I can actually stand on it (it weighs 80 lbs. with the Rhino Lining)

I would like to have my choice of vehicles, 4runner for more heavy offroad travel and the taco for longer trips with minor offroading. I look forward to reading this whole thread for ideas. I have no problems with the 255's fitment, very tough tires, some rub on UCA's at full lock but nothing to really worry about other than a shiny spot on the UCA.
Mileage? It has gone down some but since I modded so fast (weight gain) I cant blame it on any one component. Eventually I will regear to 4:10's and add a crawler box...
265's in an AT tire may be the best for a DD but I like the MT's toughness in rocks since we have so many in my primary wheeling areas of SoCal, AZ and Mexico. Ultimately, everything is a compromise.

This is a very nice setup. It looks very organized and sturdy without being overly heavy. One concern I might have, though, is that it's attached only at four points on the bedrails. I would worry about the rail fatiguing and breaking after some time off-road. That's easily improved, though.

This is a very nice setup. It looks very organized and sturdy without being overly heavy. One concern I might have, though, is that it's attached only at four points on the bedrails. I would worry about the rail fatiguing and breaking after some time off-road. That's easily improved, though.

Jason and I looked at cell4soul's setup and discussed it at length.
We are using TEN bolts vice FOUR for mounting... 4 on each side and 2 along the front rail...

I believe the Chinook word for this setup is SKOOKUM :hehe:

Something Skookum this way comes! :box:

The Demello Expedition Rack is complete!
The forward basket has room for 7 Scepter cans (or 1 water, 1 fuel, and extra gear or firewood), 4 light tabs up front, 2 antenna tabs (CB and 2M), and 2 light tabs aft. The tent opens to the passenger side.

I can mount a total of twelve lights now..

And, those hoops will carry my future kayak topside, and keep it and trail brush from tearing up the Eezi-Awn's cover...

The rack is 7ft, 3 inches tall at the forward hoop. Tent is at about 6 ft off the ground. The rack looks heavy, but it is an easy two person lift on and off the ruck without tent, four person lift with tent. I wager the entire assembly (rack+tent) weighs in at around 200 lbs.

Can you say skookum? :punk03:

Very, very nice!

I like the hoops fore and aft of the tent. Thus allowing you to carry SURFBOARDS or kayaks or really big pieces of firewood.

Anyway nice job.

Thank you Sir!
I got some OEM toolbox replacement parts kits from my dealer and used those with some longer bolts to attach the rack and toolbox to the rail. There are 4 on each side for now, I will also be adding 2 more at the front rail.

Here is what they look like:

Very cool design Doc, and seems like you really thought this one out.
Now, with the new rear end, you shouldn't have any trips cut short for any reason.
