FINALLY someone did it!!! It's a shame it's AEV though because it'll never make production, or it'll be rediculously expensive and have no customer support.

Ditto that.

I wonder if it is a direct top section replacement for the 'Freedom Top' or an entire roof replacement or what?

I will be watching this closely. I hope the cost stays affordable. Not that AEV has a history of making affordable parts, though.....

If I had buckets of cash, that is how I'd roll ... at least after the 3.8 is upgraded. Word is, the 3.8 V6 is a temporary engine - a placeholder, if you will ...

I guess I am. It would not suprise me if they got the idea from seeing Mayahual on this blog. Through my work, I am associated with "concept" people in many industries and know how designers are constantly on the prowl for fresh ideas.

Sorry if I come off like a wet blanket here...But I feel sorry for the designers that are working for the companies that work for the exibitors that go to shows like SEMA...For the fact that they RARELY do anything "out of the box", and are relegated to figure out how to get people excited about the same old production _ _ _ _(Jeep, Toyota, Ford, etc.) by changing the paint, interior highlights, bumpers...Then jumping up and down, while saying "look how inovative we are.

I spent more than my share of years doing the same thing (different industry though) and feel fortunate that I now get to work on true "out of the box" concepts.

Before I succumb to my blind excitement, I wonder if there is a hole in the floor (roof) for access to the interior of the vehicle, and I wonder what sort of protection from the elements the camper provides. I'm assuming there are canvas walls that could be installed.

I was wondering about interior access as well. Curious to see what it looks like closed. Reminds me of a D110 roof.

Where the heck can you walk around tho? just the back portion? Stepping on seats? Is there a sink? Is it just a sleeper up top?

Its cool for sure though.

Definitely cool but I'm guessing its just a sleeper on top with outside access only.

If thats the case I think you get more flexibility with a high quality rooftop tent.

Yeah. Though it is totally cool looking, I'd probably rather buy one of these. Looks very similar. The tent that is! ;)

My guess is that there is no interior access in the "concept" pictured...but if it were to ever make it to production (which I doubt), I give it a 50/50 chance of having interior access.

Considering the top is modular, and the amount of usable surface area on the roof of the Unlimited, I don't think there's anything stopping anyone from making a trick replacement top / tent-camper.

For instance, a large platform could fold out to the side of the vehicle, and open up into a canvas tent - 1/2 to 3/4 sleeping platform, and the remaining open space would be vehicle interior access.

Blah. It needs the top to go straight up & down, and cool retro stripe graphics, and whitewall tires.......... oh wait, that's been done already. Nevermind.

I have been a hardsell on the 4 door wrangler idea, being a longtime CJ, LJ owner (the 2dr JK is an improvment). Seeing the 4dr around here for sometime (near DCX home) in stock form with really small tires, has made for a few outbursts I can't share. It's even uglier on stock tires than our LJ......

Now couple the fact that AEV LWB TJ got me on the "TJ with more room bandwagon" I jumped on the first LJ's produced........

"I was on the Wrangler with a tent on top bandwagon" and ended up here due to research on the Maggolina for said LJ, love this place BTW.....

Now this !!!!!!!!!!!....Not only is it sweet I want one bad..... After I get done pouting (the only AEV thing I can afford is wheels). I may find the way to expensive Maggiolina is a great deal after all...

I saw the AEV with popup camper at SEMA, and frankly, I was disappointed. There is no interior access to the popup. The interior is stock.

AEV removed the standard Jeep roof, pop-riveted a sheet of aluminum across the roof for support, and stuck the pop-up on top. There is no way provided to climb up and down. It appears to be a last-minute idea that was not thought through completely.

The popup is as narrow as a pup tent, and the screened sides lack any sort of overhang that could provide shelter from mist or dew. The Eezi-Awn style of tent that folds out wider than the vehicle's roof is much roomier, and it's better protected from the elements.

The lift for the Jeep chassis and the 38" tires look great, no doubt.

Now if they had raised the Wrangler Unlimited roof a la the Troop Carrier, and outfitted the interior with some storage, and installed a cooking station that slides out for use..

dang!.. that thing is so pimp (blazerchalet)

Aaron S's & Doug W's web site http://www.blazerchalet.com/serials.html says a magazine article stated there were 1780 total 1976 & 1977 Chevy & GMC versions, and I managed to extract an official reply from a GM corporate customer service rep that said there were 1555 '76 & '77 Chalets, so the math says there must have only been 225 '76 & '77 GMC Jimmy Casa Grandes. Rare vehicles, still not all that valuable. (More at this thread: http://expeditionportal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2291

As for the Jeep AEV popup camper, too bad Chip Haven confirms it was a bit of an afterthought buildup, however, the concept may not be toast yet. Consider that the old Blazer / Jimmy doesn't look very roomy in the back, yet there is real truth to Aaron S's comment in the blazerchalet.com web site that, "...the comment I get most after "what IS that?" is that the camper is much larger inside than it would seem..."

So with a bit more cleverness to the design, trapdoor access to the upper part, and perhaps an overhang extension to the back, it could be made into a functional 1-person expedition camper.

By the way, you can put a camper on anything. See: http://hem.passagen.se/lamini/topp.html click on the Toppola links

So I wrote to the guys at AEV and ask "what's up with the pop up, can I get one" There reply was

Thank you for your interest in our company. The JK camper top we displayed
at the SEMA Show was a prototype and we are researching different
manufacturing processes for the development of the part. Please check our
website for updates contact me with any questions that you may have. Thanks again for the interest and have a nice day.

So my question here is, shall we come up with 15/20 ideas, and have our "fearless leader" send them our list of ideas? You never know, what could come of it all.
