More or less I'm looking to get some idea's for an upcoming projest. Please show me and tell me about what and why you built your Jeep like you have.

I dig the green.

The Jeep looks solid, and balanced.

Have you upgraded the D35 yet? I would recommend it.

Revolver shackles in the rear are excellent too.

What are your plans for the vehicle? Touring the back roads on single day trips? Taking the family down to the Sierra Madre? Bouncing off of big rocks?

Personally, I left my jeep basically stock. Small lift (3.5"), 285/75R16 tires, some body and chassis armor, some communication stuff, some recovery stuff, a place to sleep....and a couple doo-dads here and there.

It turned out to be pretty versatile...I am comfortable taking it down a 4.5 (1-5 scale) trail, has enough room for me and my side-kick (4-legged kind) to live out of for a week+ at a time for the longer trips (Baja, Death Valley, etc), still reasonably comfortable on the street, can still get 17mpg, and has a "poser index" (AKA RTI score) of 886. My biggest complaint is the road noise gets old after the first 100 miles or so......a hard top may be in my future.

I can lay out details if you like.....but I just got home from another 12 hour shift, so I am going to track down something to eat....

My thoughts toward my Jeep are in a transition phase right now. Well more or less anyway. I was building it to do mostly rockcrawling, and harder trails, this Jeep and I have in the past competed and done very well in the old "Legends" class in rockcrawling. Over the last year I have been thinking more and more about extended trips with my friends and my Jeep to explore the ghost town of the former "Wild West", getting back to the original reason why I picked up the Jeep now 8 years ago.
The green color, came about after being hit by an uninsured driver 2 years ago, over $4K in damage was done to my Jeep, thankfully I was uninjured. But this crash had me spending the savings that I was putting away for new axles to putting the Jeep back on the road. I'm again looking around at a few options for axles, and I hope to put something under her over the winter. The only real changes that I'm thinking of making to the Jeep as it sits today are different axles, and some type of rack system so I can better organize my gear. I may also try going down to 2.5" springs because I think I have the clearance that I need to make it work.
Other than that, the Jeep as it sits today is stock 4.0 motor, custom high clearance exhaust, 35" MTR's with 3.5" springs, 1" BL, high clearance trany skid plate, 1" Brown Dog motor mounts, SYE, Detroit locker (rear), 4.10 gears, Jeeperman bumper, full size spare tire, greasable shackles, Lightforce lights, 10 LB CO2 tank, and a QAII compressor, and a winch.

But lets see some pics of all of your Jeeps. and tell me why you have built them the way you have.

Well, I don't have a Jeep, but drool uncontrollably every time I am in the presence of them. I saw a nice red one yesterday with a rack over the spare tire that had a large Thule Evolution 18 or 21 mounted on it. The width was about the same as the Jeep, maybe a bit more. That would be an interesting way to increase storage space. Check out articulate's (http://www.markdstephens.com/jeep/index.html) Jeep page, that might give you some ideas. Also, do a search here for GoodTimes' sleeping platform.

I have no Jeep pics of my own either, just wanted to say I dig the green too. Perfect color to go with all those pine trees.

Good luck with your project - sounds like you have a really nice existing setup/platform to work with.

My TJ is an "X" package. Sort of a budget version of the Sport, so it has the I-6 engine, but utilitarian trim. I was a broke kid who thought Jeeps were really cool when I bought her, and I never thought I was going to "mod" her out, either. Then did a few trips.......the most essential thing to tackle with a Wrangler is organization. Real estate is premium inside those things, but I don't need to tell you that.

I've done very simple modifications in comparison with the mega-Jeep builds going on out there, and what you have done is far more mechanically impressive. But you asked :)

My first mod was the anti-swaybar quick disconnects by JKS.
Second mod was a tow hook bolted to the frame in the rear, as I didn't have any recovery points back there
And a week before I got married, I pitched the rear seat and installed a Mountaineer Rack by Garvin. I've never regretted having the back seat out.
Old Man Emu suspension - VERY nice. I dare not call it a "lift" because it's so much more than that.
Rocker panel protection. Need I say more?
Rear bumper/swingout system also by Garvin. I went back and forth for several months between wanting a roof rack or doing an over-the-spare rack. This system won, and I got a 2" receiver, shackle mounts, and a nicer spare carrier, and a more protective rear bumper for less than the cost of a roof rack.
Warn front bumper - simply for the recovery points and the capacity to accept a winch in the future.
And the ARB Safari snorkel. It's piped and sealed properly.

My tires are merely 31" x 10.5". I'd rather move up to 33" x 10.5" but I'd have to address my drive train. I'm not ready - nor motivated - to replace the rear axle (Dana 35). I'd also need to move to taller ring and pinions, as she sits now 3.07:1 My page tells it like I think it: I should have waited for the Rubicon package.

If I didn't have the truck - as my wife and I were discussing last night - I'd love to dump the money into the Jeep (1" body lift, SYE, tummy tuck, 33" tires, Dana 44, etc etc) and get a Chaser from Adventure Trailers. Powdercoated RED to match, too!

Maybe I'll do that in the future....

Anyway, my Jeep is plenty capable for 3.5 rated trails (on the 5 scale) and I don't have any care in the world to do tougher than that.

I don't know if I answered a single question of yours.... :)

Be well,
Mark

2003 Wrangler (rubicon)
Entire drivetrain is stock, left this way for reliability.

Chassis mods:

3.5" Rubicon Express short arm kit. Chosen primarily because of the lower control arms. They stand up to abuse better than most others seem to. Plus, I like the cartridge joints (adjustable and re-buildable) that they use. I added adjustable upper control arms to the kit to allow me to use a double cardan (CV) driveshaft, supplied by Tom Woods.
Front shocks are el-cheapo DT-3000. They suck. 'nuff said
Rear shocks are Rancho RSX. They don't suck as bad as the DT's do. I also relocated the lower shock mounts outboard to 'hide' them from rocks behind the lower control arm mounts, and eliminated the upper bar-pins (which are prone to failure--like both of mine did while in Baja), all using some pre-made brackets from N'th degree mobility. Good stuff there.
Steering system is 1.25" solid 4130 with 1-ton tie rod ends. Supplied by Currie enterprises. The OE parts were weak, and bent.
Axle vents are extended into the engine compartment.Skid plates/armor:

Front lower control arm pockets (link captures) are boxed in with 3/16" cold rolled steel plate. This was a preventitive measure, as they tend to get beat up, and will cause maintenance problems if not addressed.
Steering box is hidden from the rocks thanks to a Kilby skid plate.
Rear differential has a cast steel cover from Poison Spider Customs,
Front differentail has a tubular cage on top of the OE cover. Both of these were installed because I got tired of having to re-seal the diffs after dragging them over rocks.
Rock sliders are by Sun Performance. The OE parts provided on the rubicons are junk.
Front and rear bumpers are home made, because I am cheap (and I enjoy fabrication work). Front bumper incorperates a winchplate, radiator hoop (not shown in pic above...no current pics are on-line), and protection for the roller fairlead (almost visable in the pic). One question I always get about the bumper, is why I mounted the shackles "sideways". I did this because I expected to do more winching/pulling/extracting at a angle to the side...so this plays to the strength of the attachment point. I'm happy with it thus far.
Roll cage was cut/bent by Poison Spider Customs, and welded in by me.
Belly pan/t'case mount was also made by me because I destroyed the OE part. I also added 2" of ground clearance to the belly of the jeep at the same time, while keeping the drivetrain in the OE location.Interior mods:

radio mounts for both 2 meter and CB are part of the roll cage (added by me). I needed a place to put them, so it was a natural choice. Both mic's are auto-retracting to keep the cords out of my way, and in a location where I can grab either of them without having to take my eyes off the trail.
Hi-lift mount is on the rear spreader of the cage. Out of the way, always handy. Too bad it rattles.
Shovel mounted in back, on top of wheel well. I had a quick-fist laying around from the '04 SEMA show, and I had a shovel that needed a home. Killed 2 birds with one stone.
Sleeping platform. Bolts in place of passenger seat and rear seat. Provides over 6 feet from tailgate to dash, and full width of rear compartment for gear when travelling, and for me to sleep. If the weather if bad, there is enough room for the dog to sleep inside too (providing she doesn't start farting or snoring -- she is prone to both at inoppertune times). I'm really happy with this mod. I have a TON of storage room inside, and can get out of the rain and off the ground at night. One of my favorite mods.

There are a few other things I have done here and there...gps mount, hand throttle, grab handles, etc....

Next up are some lights, steel corners, and a rack to mount my kayak to....and an adjustment to my bump stops....and a different sway bar system (Currie anti-rock at both ends)....and a few other things I haven't thought of yet (like storage tie-downs).

Those are some good looking Jeeps that you guys have.

Keep it coming! Lets see more good pics. Even the stock Jeeps, lets see what you have done. Pics of rack systems, trailers and other mods would also be real cool.

I also ditched my back seat many years ago, but my GF has an 11 year old son, and it is hard for me to leave either of them behind when I head out on day trips. Depending on what happens with the three of us I may be saving up for a new back seat and a trailer, so we can all fit in the Jeep for a few days.

What a beautiful machine, The Agave Burro! :costumed-smiley-007

I've seen Brian's Rubicon, too, which is very sweet. His sleeping platform looks like a test to the universe and goddesses of love: "Yes, that's right, I have no space for a woman in here. Go ahead, I dare you!" :ylsmoke:

Dave, I'd think a trailer is in order. With a girlfriend and a young one, the space and tent option is hard to disagree with. :smiley_drive: Everyone appreciates a soft bed...and GRRRRR! if it pleases the girlfriend...well, you know.

Well, see....the deal is kinda like this. There *is* room for 2, providing they are real friendly.....but she's gotta find her own way to and from the party.

Love your ride, Mark. We shoulda rolled together - the vast distance that seperates us aside.

This thing was great. Old Man Emu + .75" w/ 32x11.50, winch, sport cage, front and rear Powertrax No-Slips, and an Atlas 4.3:1 transfer case. It trivialized alot of the terrain around here.

I miss it. I smacked it into something. This picture was taken after the smacking occurred. After that it, wasn't quite right - like it was an unfaithful spouse, so I sold it.

Here's my 98 TJ:

http://filebox.vt.edu/users/cslynn/webstuff/Jeep-and-Trips/jeep/DSC02390%20(Large).JPG

It's a sport with 98k miles. 3" Springs in the front, 2" spacers in the back. 31" Kumho MT's, home built rocker guards, and a few other doodads.

I love the jeep for beating around in town and on the trail. But being my DD it's kind of rough. At the moment I have a gas tank with a small pinhole on the top that needs to be fixed, a bad hesitation on occasion that I can't find the source of, short belt bypassing the burnt up bearing on the AC compressor, missing right rear shock because of the cheap Doestechs wearing out and the eventual failure of a bar pin, among other things. Everytime I get time to fix one thing I end up with 2 more things to fix and/or replace. I'd love to just turn it over to a mechanic and say, here, fix it, and just have it back in sound shape.

My biggest complaint is the D35c in the rear. I find myself constantly babying it whenever I'm out cause I'm so afraid of breaking the rear. I didn't know better when I bought it, who would've thought DC would put such a fragile unit in.

...Revolver shackles in the rear are excellent too.

I have heard some horror stories about the revolvers, and them not going back as designed. I would research them a bit more, and possibly ask some jeep guys their input. From what I hear, they were designed to increase the RTI ramp numbers, and in real world (non ramp) they don't work quite the same. I am not a Jeep guy any more, but remember reading about them. Just my 2 cents.

I only say this because I'm your buddy and because I like to make fun of it: It's a jeep thing, you wouldn't understand. :xxrotflma

Switching to Toyota for a moment, I'm still thoroughly confused as to when the Z showed up in the FJ - and what the heck it means. But there does seem to be a natural progression with the Toyotas. A 40 is "old". An 80 is not as old. But the Z? AND THEN they had to go make an FJ Cruiser, as if that makes ANY chronological sense at all.

Let's eat, drink, and be merry 'round the expedition campfire. :smiley_drive:

Basically its a stock YJ with 4.0, TF999, ARB rear, OME suspension with XL leafs, 4:10 gears, TJ flares (cut as much as possible), 33 inch Firestone Destination M/T. When fully flexed, the tires don't rub.

Driveway pic before installing the extra leafs. Now sits about an inch higher.

That box is nice. What is that made of? Looks like inarguable craftsmanship, too!

3/4 inch exterior plywood.

Finished with porch paint, then coated with marine varnish (if done again I would have only done the varnish)

Marine grade carpeting from Lowes. Glued down with Weldwood contact cement.

3/4 inch aluminum angle - all angles cut with tin snips and ground with a file.

The drawer uses heavy duty cabinet slides from Home Depot (100 pound capacity).

I sealed the interior of box with caulking to keep some water out and to minimize leakage from within in case an oil or other fluid container ruptures.

mine is a 77 CJ7
stock 304 V-8
stock 3 spd. trans
running a model 44 in rear
changed low range gears in transfer case to low range gears from early bronco (forgot what change it made in ratio)
33x12.50 BFG
4.10 gears
had a detroit locker for many years in rear, got tired of its on road manners and yanked it
6k warn winch
2" lift from add a leafs
this Jeep was my daily driver for almost 20 years since the early 80's.
it has been through the Rubicon (way back when you could still camp wherever you wanted to!)
I rarely drive the Jeep anymore, my son wants me to get it spiffed up so he can use it to drive to school when he gets his license
I also have a 1946 1/4 ton Bantam civilian trailer that goes behind this jeep
a co-worker has a 74 CJ5 with around 50k original unmolested miles

My history with Jeeps goes WAAAAAAAAAY back.

Grandpa's 1952 M38a1. I learned to drive in this vehicle. Our family actually had three at one point, and they were used in Southern Utah for Deer hunting.

http://www.expeditionswest.com/vehicles/past_ew_vehicles/thumbnails/gpasjeep_jpg.jpg

This is my first Jeep, a 1953 M38a1 with some CJ body panels. I ruined it by removing the four and putting a 300+ hp 289 4V in with the stock driveline, with disastrous results... I learned so much though about what really worked on the trail.

1993 Grand Cherokee
Good Jeep. 31's and a Tera Flex system and it could wheel

1996 Grand Cherokee
Not so good, with lots of issues, but with no lift and 30" tires it did most of the high mountain trails in Colorado

1998 TJ Sahara
Great Jeep. TeraFlex and 33x10.5's No time to use it and sold the truck to put Stephanie through school.

I had a Jeep once, an '84 CJ-7. Most fun vehicle I ever owned. It's hard to beat a sunny day in the Jeep with the top and doors off. I would like to have owned a CJ-6 with a Dauntless V6 for a rare, cool old school rig.

I built a bed in my CJ-7, back in '97 and lived out of it during a two month trip around the western US to MT, WA, OR & CA. I rolled it the next summer above Silverton, Colorado and sold it to a guy in Lake City. I've posted pics before, but here they are again for those who haven't seen them. It's still sitting in Lake City, all mangled and neglected. At least it was a few months ago when I went back through there. That was hard to see....:(

First time poster, been watching for several months though. Here is my rig, it is a 2003 Jeep Liberty(KJ) Sport with the NP231 Command Trac transfer case. It has a 3" lift with 30 inch (255/70/16) General Grabber AT2 tires and, custom upper control arms. I have recently added some Mopar rock rails. Plans for the future include a roof basket, better CB antenna and mount, better lift kit, shelf for interior storage and, driving lights. I hope to get it to Moab and Monument Valley this (2007) summer or early fall.

This weekend I will be installing a Dynatrac 44 in the front with ARB in the f&r, changing my gears from stock to 4.09. Putting 33 12.5" Kumho MT tires and American Racing AR-23 Series Wheels to go with the 5 on 5 1/2 bolt pattern. I am attaching a photo of the jeep after a day on the trail and bending a front OME J1F leaf. I will be upgrading to J1Rs' all around this weekend. The Jeep is fun, I have spent a lot of time on this expedition web site and have really been inspired by the work of Scott, his Jeep, and his group in what they do. All the best to everyone here on this forum!

Another newb and another Jeep. Just your basic Rubi with a few add-ons. I'm not a real big fan of huge builds so the most that is going to happen to it (hopefully in the coming summer) is a 3" suspension lift possibly OME, and then some 33" MTs.

New here and I recognize some familiar names and Jeeps......

I'm a Jeeper who used to be into the hardcore rockcrawling scene but is now making a conversion to the expeditionary scene. Bought my Jeep brand new in 98 and it has seen 4 lifts, 4 tire sizes and a whole bunch of trails....The Rubicon twice, the Dusy, many different Hammer trails, Death Valley, Toroweap and areas nearby, Moab, and Arizona both at the Table Mesa area and in and about the Santa Catalinas near Tucson. My rig suffice to say, has been extensively modded so that it would survive the hardcore Hammer trails at Johnson Valley. Custom TBT alumiflex suspension and steering, custom hydroboost 4 wheel disk brakes, custom power steering, custom armor, custom high pinion front axle, alloy'd rear D44, Teralow 4:1, dual batteries and a cage. I also have a complete compliment of spares for my rig and tools including a Readywelder. I have a on board shower sitting in my garage that I need to find the time to install as well.

I am currently in a rebuild stage once again but this time its with the motor. I am building a hotrodded 4.0 to swap into my rig with the intention of pulling an Adventure Trailer. Using a Hesco aluminum head , roller rockers and camshaft I am figuring to add about 40hp at the crank without having to stroke the motor or deal with the smog police as it will all be emissions legal with CARB EO numbers. I've spoken to Mario several times and I am simply lining up my duckets so that I can get my trailer ordered.

I'm getting married in March which is one of the reasons prompting my switch to expedition style 4 wheeling. My wife to be loves to explore but is not so much into the motor sports aspect of rock crawling. I have to admit that its gotten a little old for me as well and I appreciate being out in the middle of nowhere without 100's of idiots running around at all hours of the night. The Trailer will provide us with the room we need, great sleeping quarters and a way for us to be comfortable on our journeys.

I'm looking to run Baja, El Camino Del Diablo, The Bradshaw Trail and Mojave Road eventually among other places, including spending time during the summer in the Eastern Sierras. We plan to relocate to the Central Coast but I still need to work a few more years to make that happen. Looking forward to making friends here and getting in on some adventures. Until then, this is a pic of my rig on Moab Rim last May........

Welcome Robert,
I am a fan of El Camino Del Diablo myself . I have ran it the past two years in the last week of Feburary (best time for wildflowers). I'm about to do Anza Borrego for 3 weeks. Maybe our trails will pass and we can sit and talk story. Until then, I enjoyed the picture.

robert j. yates
02-08-2007, 05:34 PM
Thanx for the welcome....what are your dates for Anza Borrego?

My rig isn't down yet but will be in about 2 weeks as we move forward with the motor swap which will probably take me a week to get through.

My first 4WD experience with my fiance' was a trip into Coyote Canyon.....I let her do some driving and we had the place all to ourselves with a great campsite near upper willows. Needless to say, she was hooked on the sport and probably would be up for another trip there :D

I hope to get out of town the 13th or 14 thru the 28th. At present my Jeep too is in the shop. For some strange reason the a/c compressor decided to take a dump. I am pleased to say my local Jeep dealer got on it like stink on
stuff and will get it out asap. Seems the mechanic has to call MOPAR directly about compressor to validate replacement. That's already been done and the parts are coming for repair. The mechanic asked me to come by and explain to him how to get around my Kenne Bell blower...he didn't want to be liable for an oops. I don't blame him and he was very receiptive to my input. His only reluctance was the height of my Jeep being about 7 inches higher than stock he said he had to find a taller stool!
I like your idea of placing a Hesco head on your rig and 40hp more is a reasonable increase to expect from what I have read. Myself I'd add a 4.6L stroker kit. As long as you don't get overly zealous with your choice of camshafts the smog police shouldn't get too carried away. I know I have had to go see the regulator on occasion. They never cared or at least never noted to care if I ran a "different then stock" camshaft, as long as it passed the idle and at speed sniff test. In Tucson we must pass the same emissions test as Los Angeles, so I feel your pain.

robert j. yates
02-12-2007, 09:17 PM
So you will be in Anza B this weekend? Thats a bit tough for me but next is probably doable. The weather is great this time of year.

As for the stroker decision....I was going that way but expense and durability changed my mind. I have yet to read of anyone with a stroker going 50k....they seem to eat cams and more often than not, have detonation problems because folks don't get the quench right on the rebuild.

A crate motor from Hesco was $7500 without injectors or shipping so I quickly tossed that idea. A 318 Dodge is around 10k installed and a Hemi is running up on 15k although I have yet to hear of anyone getting one refere'ed through smog here in Cali. For about 4k....I get an improved stocker, bolt in, durability and some extra HP for towing the trailer.....or at least thats my logic so I guess we'll see.

How is the Kenne Bell working for you? That was a route I was looking at but the cost with intercooler and the 91 octane kind of turned me off.

[QUOTE=Just another thought about strokers. Golden Engines sells 4.6L-260hp in Quadratec for $3500. Add roller rocker arms to unload the spring side of the valves and you should have a long runner indeed.
As for my Kenne Bell blower, I bought instead of rebuilding. I only had 35K when I installed it. I wanted more Hp for towing like you. On the dyno it runs
214hp, stock is 146. So something like 68hp and 165lbs of torgue is added. Yes I have to run premium but so do Hemi conversions. I lost about a mile a gallon but in town but on the highway I actually get better gas-mileage. It EASILY runs 70-75mph w or w/o the trailer. It doesn't have to work as hard. In the mountain passes I used to have to shift to 3rd to pull them. Now 4th and ease off or run way past the speed limit. It feels every bit as advertised- Like a mid-sized V-8 and it 50-state emissons legal no cooling or exhaust issues. It is an excellent add on. The folks at Kenne Bell are great and easy to talk with. They actually give a darn about their customers. I have a friend in my Jeep group who runs a Avenger blower. Nothing but trouble and little to no after the sell support. He only gets about 3 lbs of boost. I have 6.
I will be in Anza from the 14th to the 28th. If you are there, look me up. I'll be in Anza Springs campground the 19th-25th. Before and after..everywhere.
Good typing at ya, bro. See ya on the trail one day.:sombrero:
