View Full Version : Best tire-carrier / tail rack setup for JK's?

A roofrack isn't going to be very practical for me for a number of reasons, so I've begun looking towards a good tail rack setup for my new JK.

I know Garvin has a nice looking setup as well as a couple others. I'd like to find something that will carry at least two jerry cans (four would be nice), the spare, and largest capacity basket / tail-rack possible, and then of course, my jack-all. What's the consensus on durability? Looking toward OME for a lift to handle the extra weight over the tail.

Rockhard has a decent bumper, somewhat flimsy rack, but awesome spare tire carrier/bearing point.

I have a Hanson Bumper (http://www.hansonoffroad.com/), and it's about the strongest piece of metal I've ever seen, and it comes with an assortment of rack configurations (one of which I am selling because it's a little too big for me), but the spare tire carrier is not as heavy duty as i would wish for. It carries my 35" tire just fine, but there is a bit of vibration to it, whereas the Rockhard unit is wiggle-free.

wow that looks perfect! I like the platform behind the spare - do you have any pics of how it attaches to the carrier? It almost looks like it bolts to the tub in the right side of the pic but I can't tell. They don't appear to have a bumper-mounted spare on their website for the JK's but I'm guessing it's worth a call into them to see what could be done.

The spare tire is on a ladder frame that the top basket attached to, side baskets (for fuel/water/CO2 tanks) attach to, and the big shelf has angle steel brackets that also attach to the tire carrier frame.
