Can anyone point me in the direction of someone who has used one of these trucks for expeditions?
I think they would be a perfect base for my home built expedition vehicle but I would like to read up on other peoples experiences.
I've found quite a bit of info, but most of it is in german.
Cheers

I'm curious too. Lots of Europeans use them. I'm considering one also. I'd like to purchase one in Europe. I'd also like to know people's opinions on similar models like the 1117's etc. What's the typical top speed?

Hi Kerry,
Here in Australia alot seemed to have been used for bush fire trucks, due to their rugged nature and go anywhere reputation. Due to their age they are all being replaced by newer machines. I have seen some with as little as 17,000km on the clock.
I've heard they will cruise at around 95-100 kmp/h depending on tyres fitted.
I think most have diff locks as well.
All the ones I've seen here in Australia have been turbo'ed, but I know the European models are not always. (130hp vs 170hp)
I did find one site about a couple doing a world trip in one, all written in german, so it was a bit difficult to understand (even with babelfish!) but the only problems I could work out was with the welding quality of their custom made spare wheel carriers, and a broken wire on the alternator. I can't remember the name of the site.
Here are some travel reports with 911 in german:

Most people put larger tires on these trucks so they go about 90 km/h.

This is too wierd, I just saw an LAK911 on my way home from work today, what are the odds... It was headed north on 99 towards Vancouver, BC. I couldn't get a picture because it was too far and too quick (I was going south) but it was gray or dark tan and had a converted camper and super singles on it just like the one in the photo below. Waaaay cool.
Anyone know who it might be?

I don't think it's a 911, It looks like one of the bigger tractor units judging by the length of the bonnet. I like the water supply system.
