16998After over 15 years of using borrowed canoes I decided it was time. A handcrafted 15'5" like the one in the photo but without inlay work. He (James Gjesing - www.handcraftedcanoes.com )is going to craft some custom lashing points for my drybags, rifle case and survival kit. I should have it in May.
That is a beautiful boat! :Wow1:

That is so nice looking I would be afraid to get it wet. You are going to have a lot of people asking about your boat when you go out. Wooden kayaks and canoes always do.
Enjoy It!

Wow that looks great. I love wooden boats!
Watch out how you strap it to the roof - no metal buckles against the wood or over-tightening.
Cheers,
Graham

I was working in Waterloo yesterday so I stopped by to check on my new canoe build. James told me that he expects completion in 2 weeks. It looks like the tie downs will be carbon fibre instead of cnc machined wood (old world meets new world). Here are a couple of (poor) shots of my new canoe.

Very nice looking canoe. I have an 18' red cedar stripper that I built about 25 years ago, and it is still turning heads and going strong. Enjoy!

We had, when I was growing up, a cherry Old Town square back wood canoe. Had many great times in that canoe.

I got an e-mail and photos from James at http://handcraftedcanoes.com
Now I just need to learn to paddle better than a dog.

I took my new toy home 2 weeks ago and have had it out once since then. I just loaded it back on the small truck to take it out for the next 2 weeks. I'll have it on the Ottawa or Mattawa river tomorrow (maybe Sunday) and then the North Channel and Lake Wolsely on Manitoulin Island for the next 2 weeks.

That's a gorgeous boat - hope you have lots of good times.
Side question: That's the small truck?

Here's a shot of my canoe up at Murphy's Point on Manitoulin Island. Oh and an F150 is your small truck when you have a Benz for the serious stuff

Wow, only 50 lbs:Wow1:
I am surprised as I thought it would weigh more. I have no experience with wooden canoes at all. I've never paddled one before... don't remember seeing one for that matter.
Very neat!

It's a funny thing about the weight. It is barely more than some of the Kevlar canoes that I looked at and yet it is just as durable. Kevlar punctures very easily on sharp rocks and stuff (ballistic armor can stop 762 but it can't stop a stiletto). I happen to think that a cedar canoe is a bit more satisfying than Kevlar, Royalex or whatever. The care it requires is rewarded by the satisfaction of using it and staring at it (like a hot babe...).

That is one beauty of a canoe...if it were mine I would have to store it inside. Maybe use it as a coffee table.

That is a very nice canoe, I know you are proud of it. I would like to build one like that one day. That will happen when I have my own shop.

I found it very easy to spin it around in tight quarters ( I like to moose hunt on pothole lakes and have to get over beaver dams and through tight spots between tall weeds). It is a little tougher to keep it going in a straight line but as I get better with it that should improve.

I store it in my hallway (11 foot ceilings).
