This are MAN KAT 2. They were developed especially for the US Army as transport vehicle for the Pershing rocket. They have a water cooled V10 engine and the larger 16" tires.

The disadvantage is that they seat only two persons in the truck cab because of the engine placement. It also has a smaller wheelbase as the original 8x8 KAT 1. So a expedition cabin would not be longer than on a typical 6x6. Of course, the milage of this beast is well below 5 mpg.

Emil, what kind of mileage so you get with the KAT1? Sorry if you've mentioned this elsewhere.

Last year I got over about 8.500 km through russia with offroad a fuel usage of about 42 l/100 km (5.6 mpg). Some with lighter load get more than 6 mpg.

Hi,

here´s a nice one currently competing in the Dresden-Breslau 2008 rallye (with a 1000 BHP Leopard 2 Engine)

It´s piloted by Anja (seen here in 2007)

Who would know where I could find used MAN 8x8 trucks? I would like to use one as a service truck in next years Transsyberia Rallye.
What´s a realistic pricetag for a truck in a good condition?

Thanx,

Oily

Look at www.mobile.de for current offers.

The most recommended dealers are http://www.aignertrucks.com/ and http://www.schindler-allrad.de/ .

The price starts at about 25.000 € for the older KAT I models with air-cooled engine, and about 50.000 € for the newer KAT 1A1 with water-cooled engine. But it can even go higher for more modern MAN SX models.

Anyone have more info on that MAN truck with the leopard tank engine? I'd really like to get some more photos of it..

Thx!

Wow... As they went along in the flat, dry sand, I was counting off $10, 20, 30, ... every second in how much fuel was being used up. They must have serious money to own one of these things, or were they rentals?

Fuel is cheap in Libya, around 10-15 ct/gal. With an 8x8 you get about 2-3 mpg in heavy dunes, on the road you get about 4-5 mpg. My 6x6 gets about 5-6 mpg on the road. The 30 year old air-cooled turbo charged Deutz engine is not so bad regarding fuel consumption (225 gFuel/kWh). This is about 10-15 % worse than modern engines (190 gFuel/kWh). But the permanent 6x6 or 8x8, together with the off-road tires costs also a lot.

The trucks are not so expensive. Last time a 6x6 was about $15.000 direct from the army. But depending how much you drive and where you drive, the most money goes into fuel.

I have much more fun in driving my truck as driving any SUV. :victory:

Sadly, I bet it has more cupholders than my LX450... :(

Firstly, A tricycle with a cupholder has as many as our LX's... :(

Secondly, is she as attractive as I think she is or is that the truck behind her, 1000hp
