Finding Adventure with Defenders, Snowboards, and Sailboats

As four-wheel drive enthusiasts, we tend to focus on the vehicle aspects of overlanding most. We review various accessories, discuss the merits of different trucks and suv’s, and of course showcase some the many great trails you can take them on, but not every adventure should confined to the driver’s seat. It’s important to remember that getting out and experiencing the world around you is the most important part of any trip, and you should seek out new experiences whenever possible. In Forrest Shearer’s case, that meant driving, sailing, surfing, and snowboarding in one of the few places on earth that has all four, Iceland.

Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, Chris didn’t receive a real taste of the outdoors until moving to Prescott, Arizona, in 2009. While working on his business degree, he learned to fly and spent his weekends exploring the Arizona desert and high country. It was there that he fell in love with backcountry travel and four-wheel drive vehicles, eventually leading him to Overland Journal and Expedition Portal. After several years of honing his skills in writing, photography, and off-road driving, Chris now works for the company full time as Expedition Portal's Senior Editor while living full-time on the road.
